Things to Do This Week
If attending events, please check their COVID-19 safety requirements. It’s still a good idea to mask-up even if it’s no longer a provincial requirement. Get vaccinated/boosted. Stay safe!
Check out Hometown Hockey Tour activities downtown (10340 102 St.)
Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour lands in Edmonton this weekend April 1-4 at ICE District Plaza downtown with free live musical performances, alumni autograph signings, family-friendly games, and more! It’s FREE to attend but you’re asked to register for a day/time.
Experience SOUND OFF Deaf Performing Arts Festival (ATB Arts Barn)
SOUND OFF, Canada’s national festival dedicated to the Deaf performing arts, runs March 30-April 3 with performances and events at the ATB Financial Arts Barn as well as online. This event brings Deaf artists from across the country together to share talent, stories, and the beauty of sign language on stage.
Check out Spring on the Square (Churchill Square)
It’s apparently Spring Break! And the Edmonton Arts Council and City of Edmonton are hosting ‘Spring on the Square‘ every day from 12-4 p.m. at Churchill Square until April 1, with FREE, family-friendly programming including pool noodle lightsaber training, hula hoop circus, drum speak workshops, plus drop-in street hockey, giant chess, checkers, Lego, snakes and ladders, blocks, and chalk.
Enjoy a beer tasting and beer storytelling (Craft Beer Market 10013 100A Ave.)
As part of Downtown Dining Week (which I go over in greater food detail in the food section below!!) you can attend a craft beer tasting with craft beer storytelling hosted by my friend and local author Scott Messenger. It’s on Monday, April 4 from 7-8:30 p.m at Craft Beer Market downtown. Tickets are $16 (includes a flight of beer!)
Celebrate and recognize Trans Day of Visibility
March 31 (Thursday) is Trans Day of Visibility. Locally, Concordia University of Edmonton will be hosting a virtual event, the Edmonton Public Library has released curated books that include transgender characters, the University of Alberta has put together a list of healthcare resources for transgender people, their families and allies.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Please continue safely supporting local restaurants, in whatever way works for your comfort levels. If not dining in, please do take-out! Mask-up and please stay home if you’re sick.
Downtown Dining Week is back! Nearly 60 restaurants are offering $20, $35, $50, and $65 deals until April 10, 2022.
I’ve partnered with Edmonton Downtown Business Association to promote this year’s Downtown Dining Week running March 30-April 10. Support local downtown businesses—because they could really use the help. Don’t forget to make reservations early so you don’t miss out! Some restaurants may also offer deals as take-out for those not comfy dining in yet (restaurant dependent—check directly with the restaurant you’re interested in). AND you can park all day at Ice District Central Parkade on April 6, 7 & 8 for just $2 (11 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
This week’s recommendations are Downtown Dining Week themed and are all restaurants that are NEW to Edmonton Downtown and NEW to Dining Week:
You must dig into the dill pickle soup at Continental Treat (9698 Jasper Ave.)
Continental Treat Fine Bistro, which has been serving up some of the best European cuisine in the city since 1982, now has a downtown location on Jasper Ave.! Try their Downtown Dining Week deals: The $20 lunch includes their famous dill pickle soup—it’s SO GOOD and a Viennese crispy tender pork schnitzel. The $35 dinner includes the soup plus beef rouladen, plus chocolate brownie. I’ve tried all of these dishes and they are really, really good. Highly recommend!
Try the milkshake and burgers at Jack’s Burger Shack (10354 Jasper Ave.)
*The* popular Jack’s Burger Shack in St. Albert has opened up a location in downtown so you don’t have to drive as far to get your mouth on their popular burgers, fries and shakes. They’re doing a $20 all day deal where you get their Hangover Burger (it’s on grilled cheese!), fries, and a milkshake or beer of your choice. The Nutella milkshake is a must order!!
Find Southern comfort food at Envie Restaurant (10009 107 Street)
There’s a new Cajun and Creole southern comfort food spot downtown called Envie Restaurant that’s brought to us by the same fine folks of Louisiana Purchase. Envie is offering 3-course $20 lunch, $35 or $50 dinner deals which include dishes like shrimp bisque, Nashville hot chicken sandwich, pecan pie, jambalaya, crab cakes, ribs and more! Tasty dishes—and I want to come back to try their brunch menu!
Take your pick of deals at JustCook Kitchens 5th St. Food Hall (10344 105 St.)
JustCookKitchens’ 5th St. Food Hall is home to multiple restaurants offering a bunch of Downtown Dining Week Deals—including HOM Thai restaurant’s chicken sate skewers and sticky rice pudding $20 lunch, or if you try the $35 or $50 dinner, you get a sampler of items from all restaurants inside the food hall, which is neat!
Go for brunch and take in some art while at May (Art Gallery of Alberta)
The Art Gallery of Alberta’s new restaurant—May—is participating in Downtown Dining Week with a $20 brunch deal or $65 dinner! I have heard so many great things about the meals at May from multiple people, though I haven’t had a chance to try myself yet, you likely will not go wrong with this pick!
And check my Instagram this week to enter Dining Week giveaways I’ll be doing! The Downtown Business Association is also doing daily giveaways. (#DineYEGDT_Partner)
