Things to Do This Week
COVID-19 cases are rising. Consider staying home or choosing outdoor, physically distant activities to do. If attending events, please check to see what their COVID-19 safety requirements or changes are. Get vaccinated (and boosted), mask up, stay home if sick, keep a distance from others, and be safe out there!
Check out Chinatown Dining Week (various locations in Chinatown)
Edmonton Chinatown Dining Week returns Jan. 13 -23, 2022 with 18 participating restaurants offering $10 or $18 fixed-price deals available for takeout or dine-in (including my parents’ Vietnamese restaurant King Noodle House Pho Hoang). I’m planning to visit a few different stops and encourage you to plan a Chinatown Dining Week Crawl too!
Experience the Deep Freeze: Byzantine Winter Festival (various locations)
The annual Deep Freeze Byzantine Winter Festival returns this weekend, running Jan. 14-23, 2022 at three locations—the main one being Borden Park, as well as Pipon Village (118 Ave & 92 St) and The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse (9351 118 Ave). Come out of hibernation for a winter celebration—there will be light installations, ice sculptures, cultural stories, and more—including the popular Deep Freezer Races on Saturdays and Sundays from 4-8 p.m.
Hit up an Edmonton Winter Patio (various locations)
Okay, now that the weather has warmed up just a smidge, winter patios make more sense lol. Be sure to check out my Guide to Winter Patios in Edmonton (they’ve really multiplied compared to previous years!) Plus: if you post about your #YEGWinterPatios experience in January, you’re entered to win a $75 gift card to Rocky Mountain Icehouse!
Check out Winter Play Rangers (select River Valley locations)
The City of Edmonton is launching a new program called Play Rangers that kicks off this weekend Jan. 15, this is family-kid focused, where you all go along on some kind of adventure. On the 15th, 22, and 29th of January you can do FREE kick sledding and fort building or snowshoeing and warming fires at Whitemud Park and Laurier Park (check the schedule for locations/activities).
Create a Winterscape for a chance to win
The City of Edmonton has launched its 2022 Winterscapes Photo Contest! Create a winterscape in your yard—whether it’s an artistic creation, a winter garden, or a play-friendly piece, all made out of snow and ice, and then submit it for a chance to win prizes! The deadline to enter is Feb. 28.
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Consider take-out to continue safely supporting local restaurants. If dining in, make sure you have proof of vaccination for Alberta’s Restrictions Exemption Program. Please review current pandemic restrictions, don’t go out if sick, and stay safe!
Try something new in Edmonton’s Chinatown (various locations)
I felt that Edmonton Chinatown Dining Week $10 and $18 deals deserved to be recommended in both Things to Do and Food To Try. I’m still finalizing my list of deals to try but I know I’m for sure getting the Bubble Egg Waffle an Bubble Tea from Tea Bar, Spicy Pork Bulgogi and Vegetable Pancake from Lee House Korean Restaurant, treats from Shan Shan Bakery, Minced Pork Vermicelli Soup from Gui Lin Noodle House, and one of the Hot Pot soup options (there are three hot pot options from 97 Hot Pot, Liuyishou Hot Pot and Asian Express Hot Pot).
Celebrate the opening of Honey Jam by Round 2 (8130 Gateway Blvd.)
Honey Jam by Round 2 (and HanJan) opens this Friday Jan. 14. Their menu focuses on Katsu and Udon and their grand opening month promotion is 20% off all orders.
Grab On the Edge Coffee from the Downtown Farmers Market (10305 97 St.)
On the Edge Coffee is now roasting at the Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market using a zero-emissions, first-of-its-kind roaster reducing carbon footprint of coffee roasting by an average of 90%. Check out their kiosk at the farmers market, and then browse all the other great local food vendors too!
Dig into French pastries from La French Taste Homemade (3696 97 St.)
Mike (my husband) actually showed me a photo he saw of delicious looking French pastries from Bountiful Farmers Market’s new-ish vendor La French Taste Homemade. Check them out at the market or browse and shop their pastries online!
Try west Edmonton’s new poke restaurant (11315 174 St.)
Congratulations to Aloha Hawaiian Poke & Grill, the city’s newest poke place located in west Edmonton. Poke is delicious diced raw fish and here you can get Hawaiian or Mainland Style poke bowls, poke by the pound, poke burrito, all day breakfast, or popular Hawaiian dishes off their grill menu. Can’t wait to try!
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
