Things to Do This Week
Check individual events to see what their COVID-19 safety requirements are.
Get vaccinated, mask up, stay home if sick, and be safe out there!
Find Pop-up Holiday Instagrammable Walls at Edmonton City Centre
Edmonton City Centre has added three “Insta Walls” to their space as part of their holiday promotions and if you visit, snap and share a photo, you’ll be entered to win a $1,000 + another $1,000 to donate to charity! There’s also free parking to take advantage of.
Don’t miss Shumka’s Nutcracker (Northern Jubilee Auditorium)
The popular holiday story the Nutcracker (Shumka’s version) is at the Northern Jubilee Auditorium this weekend with only three shows. I am really looking forward to it (I was gifted tickets). Get yours!
Celebrate Winter Experiences at the first-ever Winter Promenade
Silver Skate Festival, Edmonton’s longest-running winter festival, presents the first-ever Edmonton Winter Promenade this Sunday, Dec. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. downtown. Find food trucks, carollers and more at this free-to-attend, hopefully annual winter event.
Check out the first Sonic Confluence Collective arts event (Co*Lab)
Join New Music Edmonton and the Edmonton Poetry Festival for Sonic Confluence Collective: Sounds Like Words Like Sounds on Sun, Dec. 19, 2021 at 3 p.m. online or in person at Co*Lab downtown (9641 102A Ave) for a unique spoken word and sound experience.
Catch a winter choir from Kokopelli Choirs (McDougall United Church)
After 650 days without a live concert, Edmonton’s Kokopelli Choirs is excited to bring back their annual Wintersong choir performances this Sat Dec. 18 with three shows.
Don’t miss Holidays at the Winspear (Winspear Centre downtown)
The sweet sounds of the season have arrived at the Winspear Centre: Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s A Traditional Christmas and Holiday Magic.
- Take advantage of Free Admission Day at the Art Gallery of Alberta
- As part of Downtown Edmonton’s holiday activities, the Art Gallery of Alberta is offering extended hours 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. and FREE admission this Sat, Dec. 18. Don’t miss the final days of the ROYGBIV colour exhibit. There’s also a new AGA restaurant to try!
Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!
Food to Try This Week
Make sure you have proof of vaccination for Alberta’s Restrictions Exemption Program.
Support new restaurant openings like Shoyu Sushi downtown (10011 109 St.)
Congrats to the new Shoyu Sushi, which has opened in downtown Edmonton. It looks like they’ve got quite a menu selection, a ton of sushi rolls, curry, ramen, donburi rice bowls and udon soups and more!
Try the special Hong Kong menu at Rice Bowl Deluxe (8910 149 St.)
Thanks to @j_essyc for the heads up that the west Edmonton Jasper Park Rice Bowl Deluxe offers a Hong Kong cuisine menu. You can check out the Hong Kong menu here. It includes a variety of congee, noodle soups, curries, popular HK snacks and milk tea. Give it a try!
Get some dim sum at Emperor’s Palace in Chinatown (10638 100 St.)
Thanks to @yeg.baking for posting about dim sum at Emperor’s Palace in Chinatown. I’ve never been but have wanted to try and it sounds like I should. “Are these not the biggest pork dumplings (siu mai) in YEG?” she asks.
Check out Christmas Games Night at Cafe Haven (9 Sioux Rd, Sherwood Park)
Cafe Haven in Sherwood Park is hosting a Christmas Games Night this Thursday, Dec. 16. This cafe is also offering winter holiday brunches.
Sign up for a new pasta subscription service coming to Edmonton
LA MANO, a Calgary-based pasta restaurant and shop, is expanding their Pasta Club to Edmonton. You get two fresh pasta meals for two people, created by different local chefs, delivered to your home each month. I thought their $30/month price seemed reasonable for two surprise, restaurant quality dishes / date nights per month (I’ve hinted to Mike to gift me a subscription for Christmas lol).
Ate something amazing recently? Want to show some love to a struggling restaurant? Have a take-out suggestion? Let me know to include in this newsletter.
Holiday Charity Spotlight
Santa YEG, which has been prepping and delivering over 20,000 meals for the city’s less fortunate during the holiday season since 2017, is hoping for your help. If you’re able, please consider donating to support this organization this season.
