Newsletter for Dec 8 – 14, 2021

Hi everyone! I’m still in beautiful Barbados, where Mike and I are doing our “Procreation Vacation” (IVF Abroad) treatment. It’s been amazing but I sure miss home (really—the snow and cold and everything! lol) If you’re interested in seeing what we’re getting up to in Barbados, check out this IG Story Highlight. If you’re interested in learning more about our IVF treatment or infertility journey, check out this IG Story or see my previous blog posts.

Things to Do This Week

Please wear a mask indoors and in crowded spaces. Sanitize regularly, keep a distance, stay home if sick, read up on the latest restrictions, get vaccinated, and stay safe. Check individual events to see what their COVID-19 safety precautions are (including proof of vax / masking).

Things to do this week: Candy Cane Lane returns, shop Alberta’s biggest Indigenous Holiday Market, check out Luminaria and more!
  • Shop Alberta’s biggest Indigenous Holiday Market (Alberta Aviation Museum)

    • Edmonton’s I AM COLLECTIVE presents A Very Indigenous Holiday Market this weekend Dec. 10-12 at the Alberta Aviation Museum! “APPRECIATE don’t APPROPRIATE” this Holiday season, shopping local, handmade, and authentically Indigenous items. I’ve said before but one of my acts of reconciliation is buying from Indigenous makers, artists, small business owners—the products and stories are beautiful. Highly recommend this market! Free to attend though they are collecting donation of new & gently used warm winter footwear, clothing and outer wear, women’s sanitary products, toiletries and cash donations.

  • Check out the kickoff weekend of Candy Cane Lane (9323 148 St.)

    • The much-loved Edmonton tradition of Candy Cane Lane returns this weekend and runs til Jan 1. This year the format has returned to walking OR driving through the neighbourhood (with some dedicated days just for walking only). There will also be sleigh rides on weekends leading up to Christmas! Grab your tickets, bring an Edmonton Food Bank Donation, and enjoy all the lovely lights that have adorned this neighbourhood each Christmas for more than 50 years.

  • Celebrate Winter in Little Italy (95 Street and 108A Avenue)

    • Check out the winter festivities in Little Italy this Sunday Dec. 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring free horse sleigh rides, chestnut roasting, complimentary hot chocolate and more. While you’re in the area, browse the always awesome Italian Centre, grab some food at a Little Italy restaurant, take in Giovanni Caboto Park! They’ll also do this next Sun.

  • Book your Snowshoe and Star Gazing Experience (Elk Island National Park)

    • Elk Island National Park’s popular Snowshoe and Stargaze Dark Sky Experience returns for the winter season this weekend! These usually book up fast so be sure to check out upcoming dates and snag a spot for a really lovely winter night out.

  • Explore Luminaria at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden

    • Luminaria at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden is back until Jan. 9—a beautiful, snowy, lit-up winter wonderland experience with lots of Indigenous storytelling, food, and drumming add-ons this year. A very nice date, friend, fam, or solo night in the countryside. The theme is: Winter Dreams: Celebration. Reflection. Illumination.

  • Attend the Every Child Matters Round Dance (Enoch Cree Nation)

  • Check out River Valley Adventure Company’s FREE activity day

Got an Edmonton area event, virtual event, or something coming up you think my readers would be interested in knowing about? Let me know!

  • Check out the food and drink specials at Toast Culture’s Canvas event

    • Toast Culture (11965 Jasper Ave.) is bringing back their Culture Canvas live art show series this Thursday, Dec. 9 from 5-8 p.m., featuring art from my friend Rory! • Please dine somewhere as I can’t lol. I’ve been really craving Tang Bistro! And they are offering 10% off on take-out orders from their website with code TANG10 if you want. Or, Gui Lin in Chinatown (across from my parents, King Noodle House, if you are craving that!) Co Do Hue has also recently opened a south Edmonton location, or try Edmonton’s first creamy chicken ramen broth at Menjiro(they also have some new specials!)

  • Shop the first-ever Hungry Zine Holiday Box featuring BIPOC businesses

    • Local Hungry Zine has partnered with Edmonton businesses owned by Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour, for a release of the first-ever Hungry Zine Holiday Box. There are two boxes 00 or 01 to choose from, each including a Hungry Zine issue highlighting incredible chefs and food makers in the city, along with tasty treats from them! Pick-up only.

This Week: Q&A with Shawna Bourke

Every other Sunday, I profile a new “interesting person” in a Q&A series just for paid newsletter subscribers. The next person I’ll be profiling on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021 is Shawna Bourke, Director of Marketing and Communications for WorldSkills.

My Q&A with Lauren Hunter first went out to paid newsletter subscribers on Oct. 31, 2021.

Here’s an excerpt from our Q&A:

Linda: Why do you do what you do? Why is skills development important? Why are you passionate about the skills industry and empowering / educating youth to become skilled?

Shawna: I believe that our global education systems need to better support students discover, find fulfillment, and have equitable opportunities in their chosen career path. My work aims to share their stories and challenge stereotypes. Too often bureaucratic systems, governments and educators talk at youth rather than with them. My favourite element of my work is supporting young people find their voice to challenge the status-quo.
