I was introduced to Edmonton’s salsa community a few years ago when my brother started taking salsa classes. As with most local, niche groups, Edmonton salsa dancers are crazy passionate about their craft and community. They’re also very talented.

My brother’s been taking dance classes on and off since junior high school, and Mike and I have dabbled in dance classes in recent years. My parents even started taking beginner adult salsa classes this year (so adorable). I also used to be obsessed with So You Think You Can Dance (Seasons 1-4) so you could say my family’s always been interested in (trying to) dance and watching others dance.

Coming up on May 20 is an opportunity for you to check out the local latin dance scene – at  ETOWN SALSA‘s 8th annual Salsa with the Stars gala and fundraiser!

Salsa with the Stars takes place at the Royal Alberta Museum.

With exhibits now closed – one of your only chances to visit the old museum now are for events like these!

It’s also not just about salsa.

You can expect to see dancers of various styles including tango, bachata, samba and contemporary!

I went last year to check out the show and it was great!

Proceeds from the event help the dance studio cover costs of costumes and out-of-town travel (they like to compete it salsa congresses around the world!)
