#AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop

UPDATE: as of November 22, 2020, nearly 250 people spent over $17,000 at 64 small businesses across 8 neighbourhoods in Edmonton! (Over $22,000 if we factor in the gift cards ATB surprised participants with so they could shop even more!) THANK YOU for supporting small business owners and making Round 2 of #AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop, such a big success!!!

Feel free to use these proposed small business / neighbourhood itineraries for future shopping, take-out, dining as you see fit (please be safe while doing so!)

THANK YOU!

UPDATE: as of November 15, 2020, all 200 original sign-up spots for #AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop, have been claimed! That means at a minimum $60 spend per person, we will collectively spend $12,000 at 64 small businesses across 8 neighbourhoods in Edmonton!

THANK YOU!

Additional sign-up spots for all neighbourhoods are open for sign-ups and spending until Nov. 22!

Thanks to CTV Edmonton, Global Edmonton, and CityNews Edmonton for the coverage too!

If you’re reading this after Nov 22, 2020—feel free to still use the neighbourhood small business itineraries to do your own neighbourhood shopping, take-out, exploration, etc. at any time of the year!

adopt a shop update
Thank you for supporting small businesses! Additional sign-up spots are now open until Nov. 22, 2020.

I’m excited to announce that after a successful first round of my #AdoptAShopYEG initiative back in July 2020—where 173 people collectively spent more than $8,000 to support 50 Edmonton small businesses—I’m back with a second edition, this time with help and cash incentives from my friends at ATB Financial!

Participate in the #AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop!

Keep a business you love in business! With winter looming, less walk-by traffic and more people staying at home due to rising cases (and other potential restrictions coming if cases don’t improve), the next few months could be significantly more challenging for small businesses. These businesses are central to the health of our communities—without them, our neighbourhoods would lack the charm and personality that make these places so special! They are as much a part of the fibre of our communities as those of us that live there. That’s why this version of #AdoptAShopYEG is themed around neighbourhoods!

Note: this initiative is meant to be a way you can support local businesses in a safe way. Order online (where possible) or place phone orders. Pick up items to go / do curbside. It takes place over a two week period so there shouldn’t be crowds congregating all at one time. Wear a mask—and if you’re sick—please stay home!

    • By signing-up, you’re committing to spending at least $20 at three of the businesses on your ATB Neighbourhood Hop ($60 total minimum spend)
    • You’re welcome to sign-up to more than one neighbourhood, or shop at more than three businesses per neighbourhood
    • If we get all 200 sign-up spots filled, at least $12,000 will be spent at these small businesses!!

(Thanks to everyone who sent in business nominations from Nov. 9-12. There were nearly 400 nominations received—which were then curated into the final neighbourhood itinerary/business list you can sign up for).

#AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop Itineraries and Featured Businesses:

Each business has been listed in order of how I imagine you could spend a day exploring the neighbourhood, with accompanying map/markers.

By signing up to a neighbourhood, you don’t have to visit and spend at all businesses in the itinerary, but please spend at least $60 across hopefully three of the eight businesses listed. Of course, if you want to spend at all eight, that would be amazing! And if you want to and are able to sign-up and spend at multiple businesses across multiple neighbourhoods, even better!

This list was curated from nearly 400 small business nominations and also represents 50% BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) / LGBTQ-owned small businesses.

NOTE: the form is easiest to fill out from a computer. on mobile, you’ll need the Google Sheets app to sign up. if you’d prefer (as it’s easier), please send me @lindork a message on social media and I can add your name to a neighbourhood too!

  • If you spend more than $60 in your chosen neighbourhood, please note how much you spent in the sign-up tracking sheet so we can get a firmer total. Otherwise I’ll assume you’re spending at least $60 if you sign up. The form is easiest to edit from a computer, or if you’d prefer, email or send me @lindork a note on social media to let me know which neighbourhood you’d like to sign up to and I’d be happy to put your name down for you!
  • If you’re not able to participate by spending, that’s okay too! Please share about the initiative on your social media! Tag me and @ATBFinancial. Use #AdoptAShopYEG. Your post might inspire someone else to spend and support businesses in need!
  • Each ATB Neighbourhood Hop Itinerary will feature 8 small Edmonton businesses for a total of 64 businesses (across 8 neighbourhoods). While I wish we could help all businesses (and more neighbourhoods), we tried to keep things focused and more impactful by narrowing it down to 8 businesses in 8 neighbourhoods.
  • There were nearly 400 nominations for 180 small businesses to be featured in this initiative! Check out the full list of all small businesses that were nominated, if you’re interested in supporting beyond #AdoptAShopYEG!

Why am I doing this?

  • I lifted this explanation from my original #AdoptAShopYEG blog post because it’s still true: I love supporting small businesses. I have my own small business and I grew up working at my parents small business (that is also a struggling small business). I want to use my platform for good and this is just one fun way to do that. Many businesses are struggling and while we may not be able to support all of them, all the time, we can try to make an impact through initiatives like this.
  • I’m also really thrilled this time around that some randomly selected participants will get rewarded for their support thanks to ATB Financial! ATB was started more than 80 years ago to help Albertans through the Great Depression, and their commitment to helping our community through hard times hasn’t changed. Having partnered with ATB to help small businesses across Alberta this past summer (ATB Road Trip Stops Off The Beaten Path), I know firsthand that they walk the talk when it comes to supporting Alberta small businesses and entrepreneurs!

Keep a business you love in business (and do it safely). Share about #AdoptAShopYEG on your social media! Let’s try to get all 200 sign-up spots filled and at least $12,000 spent at small businesses across Edmonton as part of this initiative!

Please note: if one of your favourite small businesses isn’t featured in this initiative, you are absolutely encouraged to still support them—spread the word about them, spend money there. Keep the local shopping and spending going beyond this initiative!

I was also trying to think of what a second phase of #AdoptAShopYEG could look like and am thrilled it involves bonus cash incentives for participants that help make a bigger impact for small businesses thanks to ATB!

Re: What else you should know about #AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop:

I do not see any support of SW Edmonton – is that because they are doing fine? I suggest Sicilian Past Kitchen South, Glass Monkey, Workshop Eatery. I realize you have a limit but it seems to me that a large region is not represented.

  • Linda Hoang says:

Hi Laurie! I ended up selecting Mill Woods to represent south for this campaign but certainly anyone is encouraged and welcome to support whichever businesses in whichever neighbourhoods they want to! I’d love to be able to include every neighbourhood in Edmonton but needed to make this manageable as well as deepen impact (instead of spreading support thin). But definitely nothing wrong with nominating your favourite businesses and perhaps I can weave them in to a nearby neighbourhood that might make sense, or I am definitely encouraging others to build shop local support in the neighbourhoods they are passionate about too outside of this project!

  • Jen Mills says:

Hi, I would like to sign up to support either 124st or Whyte Ave. I’m just having trouble doing it on my phone.

  • Can my business be added to old Strathcona Listing. Crankpots Ceramics Studio been a longtime shop on Whyte and definitely could use a boost during these times.
