I’m excited to announce that after a successful first round of my #AdoptAShopYEG initiative back in July 2020—where 173 people collectively spent more than $8,000 to support 50 Edmonton small businesses—I’m back with a second edition, this time with help and cash incentives from my friends at ATB Financial!
Participate in the #AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop!
Keep a business you love in business! With winter looming, less walk-by traffic and more people staying at home due to rising cases (and other potential restrictions coming if cases don’t improve), the next few months could be significantly more challenging for small businesses. These businesses are central to the health of our communities—without them, our neighbourhoods would lack the charm and personality that make these places so special! They are as much a part of the fibre of our communities as those of us that live there. That’s why this version of #AdoptAShopYEG is themed around neighbourhoods!
Note: this initiative is meant to be a way you can support local businesses in a safe way. Order online (where possible) or place phone orders. Pick up items to go / do curbside. It takes place over a two week period so there shouldn’t be crowds congregating all at one time. Wear a mask—and if you’re sick—please stay home!
Here’s how you can help support small Edmonton businesses through #AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop:
- From Nov 13-22, 2020: Sign up to one (or more) neighbourhood itineraries and commit to spending a least $60 in your chosen neighbourhood!
- Each neighbourhood itinerary features eight businesses you can choose to support
- There will be 25 sign-up spots available per itinerary / neighbourhood
- By signing-up, you’re committing to spending at least $20 at three of the businesses on your ATB Neighbourhood Hop ($60 total minimum spend)
- You’re welcome to sign-up to more than one neighbourhood, or shop at more than three businesses per neighbourhood
- If we get all 200 sign-up spots filled, at least $12,000 will be spent at these small businesses!!
(Thanks to everyone who sent in business nominations from Nov. 9-12. There were nearly 400 nominations received—which were then curated into the final neighbourhood itinerary/business list you can sign up for).

#AdoptAShopYEG: ATB Neighbourhood Hop Itineraries and Featured Businesses:
Each business has been listed in order of how I imagine you could spend a day exploring the neighbourhood, with accompanying map/markers.
By signing up to a neighbourhood, you don’t have to visit and spend at all businesses in the itinerary, but please spend at least $60 across hopefully three of the eight businesses listed. Of course, if you want to spend at all eight, that would be amazing! And if you want to and are able to sign-up and spend at multiple businesses across multiple neighbourhoods, even better!
This list was curated from nearly 400 small business nominations and also represents 50% BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) / LGBTQ-owned small businesses.

Why am I doing this?
- I lifted this explanation from my original #AdoptAShopYEG blog post because it’s still true: I love supporting small businesses. I have my own small business and I grew up working at my parents small business (that is also a struggling small business). I want to use my platform for good and this is just one fun way to do that. Many businesses are struggling and while we may not be able to support all of them, all the time, we can try to make an impact through initiatives like this.
- I’m also really thrilled this time around that some randomly selected participants will get rewarded for their support thanks to ATB Financial! ATB was started more than 80 years ago to help Albertans through the Great Depression, and their commitment to helping our community through hard times hasn’t changed. Having partnered with ATB to help small businesses across Alberta this past summer (ATB Road Trip Stops Off The Beaten Path), I know firsthand that they walk the talk when it comes to supporting Alberta small businesses and entrepreneurs!
Keep a business you love in business (and do it safely). Share about #AdoptAShopYEG on your social media! Let’s try to get all 200 sign-up spots filled and at least $12,000 spent at small businesses across Edmonton as part of this initiative!

I do not see any support of SW Edmonton – is that because they are doing fine? I suggest Sicilian Past Kitchen South, Glass Monkey, Workshop Eatery. I realize you have a limit but it seems to me that a large region is not represented.

I ended up selecting Mill Woods to represent south for this campaign but certainly anyone is encouraged and welcome to support whichever businesses in whichever neighbourhoods they want to! I’d love to be able to include every neighbourhood in Edmonton but needed to make this manageable as well as deepen impact (instead of spreading support thin). But definitely nothing wrong with nominating your favourite businesses and perhaps I can weave them in to a nearby neighbourhood that might make sense, or I am definitely encouraging others to build shop local support in the neighbourhoods they are passionate about too outside of this project!

Can my business be added to old Strathcona Listing. Crankpots Ceramics Studio been a longtime shop on Whyte and definitely could use a boost during these times.
