Social Media Notes
Here’s this week’s round-up of social media (& tech) news. Come by each week for what I hope to be a fun & informative blog post on social stories that caught my eye throughout the week!
- This week I’m the curator for @PeopleofCanada – a rotating crew of Canadians sharing their lives with Canada and the world. I am really excited! I’ll be tweeting a lot like what I normally tweet – but keeping in mind that most of the account’s followers are from the rest of Canada (and the world). To kick it off last night, I was asking people who weren’t from Edmonon – but have been here – to share their memories of being in the city! Got some really nice responses. Be sure to follow along at http://twitter.com/PeopleofCanada!
- One of the features I love about Snapchat is that I can post a series of Stories in a no Wifi/data zone and then it will still get saved to send out once I am back in a hotspot. Snapchat’s now added a Travel Mode feature to help you save even more mobile data while you’re out and about.
- I like this inside look at Taco Bell’s Snapchat Strategy: including that they have a dedicated in-house team of two twenty-somethings who craft content specifically for Stories – 3 times a week. They also speak fluent ’emoji!’
- Is it time to start paying more attention to Periscope? The live-streaming app (connected to Twitter) has hit 10 million sign-ups.
- Maybe bad news for Twitter: Facebook is working on a Twitter-like app that focuses on breaking news alerts. As it stands, Twitter is definitely still #1 when it comes to following breaking/developing news.
- This is one of the coolest things I’ve read all week: Did you know the true purpose of Solitaire, Minesweeper and FreeCell was to train a new generation of computer users the drag and drop movement? Say whaaat.
- A Harvest student lost his internship at Facebook after exposing a privacy flaw in the company. Seems to me like they should have hired him ASAP.
- Strange or … commendable! Hillary Clinton is incorporating lots of social media into her campaign – including asking college students to talk about debt in 3 emojis. Hit/miss?
- The presidential frontrunner also just joined Snapchat! I have to say, her first Snapchat (Yaaaas, Hillary!) with an old yearbook photo, was very good, lol.
- After a not-so-great Vanity Fair feature on Tinder, the company seemingly went rogue – having a complete public meltdown on Twitter, listing off a lot of points that weren’t really all that strong. And really, all it did was make me want to go read the feature, which you can also do right here! Tinder later said they might have ‘overreacted’ in their Twitter response, lol.
- You can now send long paragraphs in direct messages on Twitter – after the social newtork dropped its 140 character limit in its private messaging feature.
- There’s a new group messaging app in town – and it’s being developed by Khloe Kardashian. “Regroupd” helps friends make quick and easy plans – sort of acts like a decision making / polling tool.
- Ewww. You can now include bitmojis into your emails and other things thanks to a Chrome extension… Please no. I’d love an EMOJI Chrome extension though!
- Ah! Do you know 73-year-old Toronto councillor Norm Kelly? He is a Twitter superstar – with more than 100,000 followers now, thanks to his general wittiness. I love his take on it. “Twitter is the equivalent of stepping away from the podium and into the crowd.” He also admits to stealing “shamelessly from everyone” lol.
- Could more serious blogging be coming to Facebook? Looks like they’re testing a design update to Notes!
- Did you see this week’s Cat Saturday photos?! My favourites are 3, 7, 9, 13, 18, 21, 29, and 34!
