Social Media Notes
Here’s this week’s round-up of social media (& tech) news. Come by each week for what I hope to be a fun & informative blog post on social stories that caught my eye throughout the week!
- How a-meowzing! The New York Museum of the Moving Image will open an exhibit dedicated to the history of Internet cats! Can’t wait! Planning underway for 2016 Cat Fest…
- More on Google’s Google+ flop: After moving Google Photos out of the service, Google is now starting to separate Google+ profiles from regular Google accounts. Why do Google social networks always flop?!
- More Facebook Video game-upping. They say video creators will now be able to restrict who can view videos by age and gender (in addition to location/language options already offered).
- #Curvy is now unblocked from Instagram, after the social network got in trouble for banning the hashtag citing the tag brought up lots of porn/nudity (even though things like #skinny remained searchable). They’ve now implemented a new automated system that will filter out porn/nudity.
- Snapchat is adding more publishers to its Discover feature – while cutting ties with existing partners. I hardly ever tap into their Discover tab/stories but I am very curious to know how much orgs are paying to be on there.
- After the moderator mutiny at Reddit, this article on the Internet’s moderators is very interesting. “The hottest tech companies no longer want to run communities, with all their messy, unprofitable human drama. Instead, they want to make platforms slick, frictionless, infinitely monetizable.”
- Although it’s not totally new – users have noticed that over the weekend Twitter started deleting stolen jokes based on copyright grounds.
- Twitter has removed the option of having customized home screen backgrounds (they sort of did this already with a previous redesign anyway). While no official reason has been given, techcrunch speculates it’s to make ads look better.
- Twitter has reportedly been working on an ‘Edit’ feature for awhile now (quick edit, for typos) but it looks like that feature launch could get sped up after Kim Kardashian tweets that she sent an email to Twitter requesting for the Edit button.
- In its ongoing efforts to fight trolls and harassers, Twitter has launched a ‘Safety Centre’ – an extended ‘help/F.A.Q.’ section, with more clear lists and info on existing features you can use to combat haters and horrible people.
- Is it possible to permanently delete a social media profile? Hint: Uh, no not really. Think copies and back-ups and data centres.
- More than half of Americans say they have social media regrets. Do you?
- Did you see this week’s Cat Saturday photos?! My favourites are 1, 4, 8, 15, 29, and 34!!!
