Social Media Notes
Here’s this week’s round-up of social media (& tech) news. Come by each week for what I hope to be a fun & informative blog post on social stories that caught my eye throughout the week!
- I apologize for missing the last few weeks’ social media notes – my life was consumed with the Edmonton International Cat Festival (which was a huge success!) This year’s event raised $30,000 for the Edmonton Humane Society, Little Cats Lost, and SAFE Team Rescue! Read my recap of the event here.
- I’ve never seen this before! Facebook Pages now have a one-click “Get Notifications” button that will give you a notification every time the page posts! This is pretty big, considering Facebook restricts how many people get Page posts in their newsfeeds.
- I’ve never really thought to look for my online doppelganger but this story certainly intrigues me: How my doppleganger used the Internet to find and befriend me.
- Could Facebook, Google, Alibaba or Microsoft one day own Twitter? Early Twitter/tech investor says any of those four companies would benefit strategically if they bought our favourite 140 character social network.
- Apparently Google+ isn’t going anywhere, but it will go through some big changes in the coming months. I never know why Google’s social networks always fail.
- This is a super interesting (and kind of worrying) read on the “Digital Dark Age” – where future generations will have little or no record of the 21st century as our lives/memories exist in hard drives and on clouds.
- The GIF reaction struggle is real. Tumblr is rolling out a new GIF search feature to make it easier for users to insert the perfect GIF into a blog post or response.
- Also HUGE Gif news! Facebook says it will now support animated GIFs in the Facebok news feed! hehehe!!
- Another new Tumblr feature: “Answer Time” is meant to take on Reddit’s very popular AMAs (“Ask Me Anything”)
- A simplified Facebook (Facebook Lite) is expanding its reach to even more countries. It’s their take on being accessible in emerging markets with low-end devices.
- They’ve been testing it for awhile, but now Instagram has opened up advertising to all businesses of all shapes and sizes – from big corporations to small mom and pop shops. I’m really curious to see how this plays out.
- Twitter has no doubt changed how people watch (and interact with) TV. Here’s Neilsen Social’s latest numbers on the TV seasons biggest moments on Twitter.
- Interesting: Facebook threats are not criminal unless intentional, the Supreme Court has ruled. Which basically means you can post about murdering someone but this isn’t criminal unless it can be proven that you intended to write it as a “true threat.”
- Pinterest is popular but as with most social networks, not all that profitable. They’ve introduced video ads now as a way to combat that.
- Google & Twitter have teamed up to allow tweets to appear in Google searches: Searches will now produce real-time content from Twitter in addition to your usual search results.
- On the business and social media front: Facebook is testing a feature called “Saved Replies” which would allow Pages to reply to customers using canned responses.
- I didn’t realize getting your friends to pay you instantly was a big social networking priority but Facebook has made some tweaks to its Messenger payments feature. This is currently only available in some U.S. cities but should expand out to all soon ’nuff.
- They’re watching: The Air Force was able to track the location of ISIS fighters from a “moron”‘s social media post.
- A new study takes a look at what some of the CEOs from the world’s largest companies do on social media.
- How do you end your emails? If you write Best, then you’re the worst. Check out this Bloomberg article on the worst email sign-offs and why it needs to stop.
- Did you see this week’s Cat Saturday photos?! My favourites are 4, 9, 16, 17, 20, 24, 26!
