Social Media Notes
Here’s this week’s round-up of social media (& tech) news. Come by each week for what I hope to be a fun & informative blog post on social stories that caught my eye throughout the week!
- Twitter Search has never been all that great but the company has announced you can now access their new search index – sifting through ‘hundreds of billions’ of tweets sent since 2006. Just use Twitter’s Advanced Search.
- I, like many others, knew this pain well – trying to paste a link into a Direct Message would result in Twitter errors. Now Twitter says you can once again share URLs via DMs! They said the error was a result of the company ‘updating its backend and infrastructure’ but it was like that for so long I doubt they were really pursuing the update that heavily.
- Good for WhatsApp: Practically uncrackable encryption” comes to the popular messaging service.
- A social network on the rise… Anonymous messaging app YikYak raises $65 million in funding, with more and more college students using it.
- The Supreme Court will test limits of free speech on Facebook in a case next week – related to violent posts shared on Facebook that are protected by the First Amendment.
- I love when the Internet is hilarious. People are tweeting like Jaden Smith and the results are perfect.
- Possibly the most important Buzzfeed quiz out there: How emoji are you?
- Speaking of Buzzfeed quizzes, Buzzfeed says social rules and it is bigger than most TV networks. Check out some newly-released infographics to prove that point.
- Tinder saga continues: Whitney Wolfe, the former Tinder employee who sued the company for sexual harassment and workplace discrimination, has teamed up with two other Tinder employees to launch direct competitor ‘Bumble.’ Rumour has it the company has already raised millions pre-launch.
- Because Facebook likes to break out all of its features into standalone apps that are pointless: Facebook releases a new app called Groups. An app that helps you manage your Facebook Groups. Thanks Facebook. Lol.
- I think this article about how comedians love Twitter and how it’s like another comedic stage is really interesting!
- The Internet’s most famous cat debuts her Christmas movie this weekend! I can’t wait to watch Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever.
- Did you see this week’s Cat Saturday photos?! My favourites are 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, and 21!!!
