Social Media Notes
Here’s this week’s round-up of social media (& tech) news. Come by each week for what I hope to be a fun & informative blog post on social stories that caught my eye throughout the week!
- Although they’ve been hinting it at for awhile, now Twitter’s CFO has announced the Facebook-style filtered newsfeed is coming to Twitter, whether you like it or not. Very unfortunate as the unfiltered, live minute-by-minute nature of Twitter’s stream is really its core feature.
- Facebook announces it now has 100 million users in Africa, which is about half of all Internet users in Africa.
- The global text messaging platform? Mark Zuckerberg says he now wants WhatsApp to reach 2 to 3 billion users (instead of his initial 1 billion user goal).
- All eyes are on Apple ahead of the iPhone 6 launch media event on Sept. 9! Mike and I alternate iPhones (so I had the 4 he had the 4S I had the 5 he had the 5S) so I’m excited to get my hands on the 6.
- Farewell to a lame site anyway – Twitpic is shutting down after a legal battle with Twitter. I can’t beleive it was even still around after Twitter incorporated image uploading.
- Facebook’s Slingshot app removes a unique feature, essentially becoming a Snapchat copy (that’s really what it was before anyway) and not a very good one at that. #RIPSlingShot (probably)
- Instagram’s Hyperlapse app shares the same name as another timelapse app – and the owners of that one started charging 99 cents for their previously free app, resulting in more than 2,000 buyers paying for the wrong Hyperlapse. Pretty clever! They also had more than 45,000 free downloads. Popular by association (and people not being very smart lol)
- Google will pay at least $19 million to parents for an “unfair” in-app purchases complaint.
- Have you seen Twitter’s new Buy button yet? A small percentage of users are supposed to receive Buy button tweets Monday, another effort from the company to try and make some moolah.
- An interesting read on police agencies using social media to fight crime.
- A new survey finds that the annoying Facebook auto-playing videos are causing high data usage charges for mobile users. (Though I’ve heard this before so it’s not totally new results).
- Did you see this week’s Cat Saturday photos?! My favourites are 1, 6, 10, 11, 12, 26, and 30!

honestly the pictures look like the food is pretty greasy which isn’t that appetizing, and I love a good big bowl of pasta.
