Review: The Mad Platter Bistro

The Mad Platter Bistro at 20 McLeod Avenue, Spruce Grove.

Last Saturday Mike and I went for date night in Spruce Grove. We were planning on seeing Brave in theatres but also wanted to dine in the area.

As I often do, I turned to Urbanspoon for ideas on what restaurant we should try. We ended up choosing a place called The Mad Platter Bistro (at 20 McLeod Ave.) because it boasted an impressive 91% Urbanspoon rating.

I liked the place as soon as we walked in. The décor was very cute and the chairs and seat cushions made me feel like we were dining at a café in Paris, like we had gotten away from Edmonton (which technically we had, but like really, really gotten away ;)) The restaurant played very folksy kind of Celtic music that isn’t normally our regular listening taste but was actually really nice and definitely added to the super pleasant ambience of the place. We sat by the window so the sun was spilling in. It was just lovely.

The owner was very friendly. He told us The Mad Platter Bistro had been around for a year (they are actually celebrating their one year anniversary on June 30 with a new menu and live entertainment throughout the day!) I told him the place had a very good review on Urbanspoon and he said he’s very grateful of that and for their regular customers.

Menu at The Mad Platter Bistro

He handed us a single page dinner menu. There are not very many options but what they did have sounded good.

Mike chose the ‘Mad Platter signature roast beef served with baked potato and sautéed spring vegetables’ ($21,95).

I chose the ‘Jerk chicken with sweet potato mash and chayote salad’ ($18.95).

We thought the price points were a little high but I would say worth it. The food came out very quickly and tasted fantastic. The Mad Platter is also a spice shop so I expected their food to be seasoned well and I was right – delicious!

Mike’s roast beef was excellent and my chicken tasted divine. Both items were steaming hot too which made it taste even better. I loved the sweet potato mash but wasn’t as fond of the chayote salad in a sauce I can’t name but I think the sauce is what I didn’t enjoy about it.

The food made me feel at home. It was like having a great meal at home, it felt very comfortable. We gobbled up everything (except I had some salad left over) and were left full and satisfied.

Overall I would definitely recommend trying The Mad Platter. The ambience is wonderful, cozy and quaint, the service is great and the food is delicious. It is a bit pricier than we’d prefer, especially given that it’s just a small, pretty casual dining spot, but it’s not so pricey that we wouldn’t recommend it.

So have you been to The Mad Platter Bistro?! What did you think??

  • A friend and I had lunch at the Mad Platter this past Wednesday. The experience was amazing. I usually don’t expect much at a cafe, but the Mad Platter is miles beyond the typical cafe environment. Though casual, the ambiance was warm and inviting, clean and spacious. There was soft music in the background, just loud enough you could enjoy it and yet carry on a quiet conversation with people at the table. The service was superb, friendly and prompt. The food -delectable. In fact, it was the most delicious meal I’ve had in a long while. And the cost was reasonable. I will be back often.
