Review: Nello’s Restaurant

Nello’s Restaurant at 512 St. Albert Trail, St. Albert.

A few weeks ago, Mike and I went to pick up our new car … in Athabasca! Mike’s cousin owns the Koch Ford there and he was able to get us a good deal on the vehicle so we made the hour & a half trek up there with our friend Logan. Since Logan basically spent his Friday night driving us up, we wanted to repay him with dinner! Since we drove through St. Albert to get up to Athabasca and would be going back through it to get home, it made the most sense to pick a restaurant in that city for our lovely dinner date. So I picked Nello’s Restaurant! (#4A 512 Saint Albert Trail).

And that’s what it was – a really lovely dinner date with my hubby and his bestie. :) Nello’s feels very much like an intimate, romantic spot for couples. Their St. Albert menu is the same as their south Edmonton menu so this review will apply even if you don’t plan on heading up to St. Albert for some great Italian.

Bocconcini Cheese Bruschetta - Diced roma tomatoes, garlic, fresh herbs, olive oil and balsamic vinegar with bocconcini - $14

Bocconcini Cheese Bruschetta – Diced roma tomatoes, garlic, fresh herbs, olive oil and balsamic vinegar with bocconcini – $14

We started with the Bocconcini Bruschetta – diced roma tomatoes, garlic, fresh herbs, olive oil and balsamic vinegar with bocconcini cheese ($14) – which was amazing! It tasted so refreshing and light and I could not stop myself from going back for more. I normally don’t like balsamic vinegar too but in this amount and combination, it really worked. Plus the amount of bruschetta you get for the price is fantastic. Great bang for your buck with this appetizer!

Seafood risotto - with prawns, scallops, mussels - $31

Seafood risotto – $31

I ordered the Seafood Risotto ($31) – which wasn’t listed on the menu but was listed on their specials chalkboard. While a bit on the pricier side, again, the amount of food you get is quite substantial. My risotto was very rich and creamy, and included scallops, mussels and prawns. It was delicious and also made a great leftover lunch!

Pasticcio - five pastas baked in the oven with GIGI sauce, Parmigiano & mozzarella - $19

Pasticcio – five pastas baked in the oven with GIGI sauce, Parmigiano & mozzarella – $19

Mike ordered the Pasticcio – five pastas baked in the oven with GIGI sauce, Parmigiano & mozzarella ($19). This price is far more reasonable than my risotto and again, huge portions!! He really liked this dish – and said the sauce and cheesiness made it great.

Stuffed Bell Peppers - with ground beef, baked with mozzarella, Parmigiano cheese and tomato sauce - $23

Stuffed Bell Peppers – with ground beef, baked with mozzarella, Parmigiano cheese and tomato sauce with Caesar salad – $23

And Logan ordered the Stuffed Bell Peppers with ground beef, baked with mozzarella, Parmigiano cheese and tomato sauce with Caesar salad ($23). Again, great flavours and great value here. Logan said the Caesar salad was also one of the few he’s had where he’s clearly tasted garlic, which apparently makes for great Caesar salad.

Overall, Nello’s is definitely on the pricier end of the restaurant spectrum, but we really enjoyed our food. The portions are great. The atmosphere is terrific – refined and romantic. Our service was also awesome. Our dishes came out quite quickly and our server topped up our drinks before we even needed to ask. We’ll likely be back, but probably not too frequently due to the price points. Still, our experience was really fantastic and I love that it’s a family-owned restaurant! I also really want to come back and try more appetizers since the bruschetta was so amazing! I definitely recommend Nello’s for a special night out!

So have you been to Nello’s?! South or St. Albert? What did you think??

Yah I’ve been there once. They served me scramble egg pasta but I ordered carbonara. The waiter told me that’s the way it was suppose to be.
