Review: Kazoku Ramen

Our ramen options in Edmonton continue to get better and better!

More areas in the city are also being covered – you’ve got Nomiya in the south, Kobe Sushi Ramen even farther southPrairie Noodle on 124 Street, Yuzen (only on Saturdays) in St. Albert north, and so many more…

On the west end (most conveniently located for Mike and I), is Kazoku Ramen, which opened in October.

When Mike and I first went to Kazoku (located at 16518 100 Ave.) back in October, we actually weren’t too impressed.

While the noodles were tasty, we found the broth pretty bland, and toppings lacking.

Luckily, after a couple of months, we returned to Kazoku – which had made some changes in their ramen bowls based on customer feedback, and have since returned many more times! We’re now big fans of Kazoku ramen.

Kazoku offers seven variations of ramen that range in price from $12-$15.

The menu is small, focused primarily on the ramen.

They have a small selection of appetizers including beef tataki, gyoza, and chicken karaage, plus some rice and curry bowls (which I’d still like to try).

We love gyoza and always order it, but the ramen is really the star at Kazoku.

But the appies and other dishes are not the stars here!

Here are the ramen offerings at Kazoku:

Serving up all the ramen (when Kazoku first opened).

We now have a pretty specific order when we go to Kazoku.

Mike loves the creamy tonkotsu ramen ($14), which comes with char siu (pork), half soft-boiled egg, nori, bamboo shoots, corn, bean sprout, toasted sesame, green onion, and naruto.

Super rich and delicious. Mike also always gets it with extra char siu.

I’ve now gotten the spicy miso ramen a number of times.

This spicier broth includes char siu, half soft-boiled egg, shredded nori, bamboo shoots, corn, toasted sesame, green onion, and naruto.

At $13, it’s a generous portion with good broth and quantity of toppings (always important).

Love naruto!

In fact along with tasty broth, great noodles and good number of toppings, what should be noted at Kazoku is their ramen bowls always look impressive.

The bowls are large and deep (the photos may not show bowl depth that well) but if we go by the saying we eat with our eyes, then just looking at the bowls will fill your appetite.

End your meal with Kazoku’s tasty waffle-yaki:

Two fluffy waffles stuffed with sweet red bean topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate drizzle.

Who knew red bean and waffles could go so well together?

When we’re craving ramen, Kazoku’s an obvious pick.

Conveniently located (at least for us – and the cops at the west Edmonton police station across the street), quick, delicious, solid helpings and a great price.

I also love that Kazoku was receptive to feedback they heard from customers back in the fall when they first opened, and tweaked their recipes a bit to improve.

We’ve certainly seen a huge improvement and love their ramen.

The service has also always been excellent during all our visits.

There’s a rumour that you can also try to finish a ‘Godzilla’ bowl of ramen (hence the adorable Godzilla cartoon nomming on a piece of naruto). If you finish, you get the meal free, and a free T-shirt. At least, that’s what they told me when they first opened, I don’t actually see the Godzilla bowl on their menu and I keep forgetting to ask on our return trips, but if you get there before my next trip, and you’re up for the challenge, ask about the Godzilla challenge!
