Review + Giveaway: Brunch at Hotel Selkirk (Fort Edmonton Park)

I love brunch!

Some of my favourite places to brunch in the Edmonton area include The Loft at SandyView Farms (out in Spruce Grove), XIX Nineteen (currently only serving brunch at their new St. Albert location), New York Bagel (which I haven’t been to admittedly in years, but used to go all the time with my brother), and Urban Diner. We even recently tried brunch at Brown’s Socialhouse and really enjoyed it there too (and watch for a review of Cured Wine Bar’s new brunch offerings soon too!)

There are also a few more brunch spots (particularly in the 124 Street and downtown area) that I’ve yet to try but am told are fantastic, and I also enjoy brunch buffets – most recently having tried and can highly recommend the brunch buffet at the Johnson’s Cafe in Hotel Selkirk Fort Edmonton Park!

Keep reading for my review and scroll to the end for my ~giveaway~ of brunch for 2 so you can try Hotel Selkirk too!

Time to brunch with Mike at this 1920s-style Hotel Selkirk!

Most people I’ve talked to actually don’t realize you can not only stay in the 1920s-style Hotel Selkirk in Fort Edmonton Park, but also just stop in for their Sunday brunch! I actually didn’t know this until very recently!

The all-you-can-eat brunch is $32 per person and includes price of admission to the park (if say, you were doing brunch in the spring/summer when the park is operating) so it’s a pretty good deal.

Inside Hotel Selkirk – Sunday brunch at Fort Edmonton Park!

Brunch is set up in the lobby of the hotel and when we went last Sunday at 11:30 a.m., we were one of the first tables there – but it didn’t take long for that to change.

Packed for Sunday brunch!

I’d love to say that I’ve ‘discovered’ this hidden brunch spot in Edmonton but based on that morning, it looks like it’s already a popular spot for Sunday brunch! And understandably so.

Gimme all the omelette fixings please!

Hotel Selkirk has all the dishes you’d expect at a hotel brunch buffet, but at a much higher quality than hotel brunches I’ve had at some other places around town! Mike and I really enjoyed the brunch dishes we tried here!!

The brunch menu at Hotel Selkirk includes (ready for this long list?):

    • A chef-attended omelette station (made to order! I got everything except the olives and peppers so my stuffed omelette included ham, bacon, chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions!)
    • Market fresh salad bar including garden greens (cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, shredded carrots, red onions and roasted corn) with a selection of dressings
    • Caesar salad, assorted pickles, olives, cottage cheese & boiled eggs & vegetables and dip
    • European cold cuts platter
    • Traditional potato salad, seven-bean salad, Bermuda onion salad, country-style cabbage coleslaw
    • Scrambled eggs
    • Parmesan grilled tomatoes
    • Sausage and bacon
    • Hashbrowns
    • Sliced pork loin with apple pineapple compote
    • Grilled chicken breast with tarragon jus
    • Pasta primavera
    • Seasonal vegetables
    • Carving station featuring Alberta AAA roast beef with herb jus & rolls
    • Various morning baked goods including Danish pastries, muffins, croissants, bagels and a selection of imported and domestic cheeses
    • Selection of mini desserts including tortes, squares, eclairs, freshly baked cookies, tarts, mousses, apple pineapple crumble, baked yogurt with glazed almonds, bread pudding, and milk chocolate fountain with fruit

Whew! Told you it was long :)

Things I’d like to point out about this tasty brunch:

  • Normally I don’t like warmed tomatoes but the grilled Parmesan tomatoes were so good!
  • Hotel Selkirk offers my preferred brunch hash browns – diced and delicious
  • The sausage is fantastic and I really enjoyed my omelette (my way~)
  • Mike was salivating over the carved beef – he went back happily for seconds and says this was his favourite dish
  • Well – favourite alongside the tarragon chicken, which was also very good
  • I really liked the pasta and seasonal vegetables too – after having the ‘br’eakfast part of brunch, I was happy to have really great l’unch’ parts of the brunch too. Be sure to save room!
  • The bread pudding was a fantastic dessert and I am also a sucker for the white chocolate fountain fruit

More of the ‘unch’ of brunch!

Lots of white chocolate dipped fruits.

Our server Ron was super friendly, as were chef de partie Craig Yahnke (at the omelette station), sous chef Soben Naganoolil (at the carving station), and pastry chef Rohan Borhade.

We thanked them for the awesome morning meal and gave them lots of kudos on the dishes (as we had to come back to them several times for seconds and thirds!)

Sunday brunch at the Johnson’s Cafe at Hotel Selkirk in Fort Edmonton Park was such a lovely experience I’d absolutely recommend. The food and service was fantastic, and the atmosphere was great. The room is also very well-lit (for the sake of those food photos! ;))

Normally I don’t prefer brunch buffets because I find it’s a whole lot of stuff, but the stuff just isn’t that great. (I’ve even found Las Vegas hotel brunches to be kinda meh). But I thought quality of food here at Hotel Selkirk’s brunch was really good.

The brunch price is on par with other, similar hotels/restaurants in the city, and during the park’s operational season, it’s also a no-brainer if you’d like to wander and enjoy the park after brunch as well – with admission price being included in the brunch cost. (Reservations are recommended).

I’d also love to return to stay at the actual hotel too. With the way our Canadian dollar is – staycation/Canadian trips are more enticing than ever and one at Fort Edmonton Park right in your backyard – in Edmonton’s beautiful river valley – would be really lovely.

Go and enjoy brunch at Hotel Selkirk! Better yet, enjoy it on me.
