Review: Dishcrawl Edmonton: Celebrate the Summer with Downtown Eats

This is an extremely belated post (but better late than never!) of Dishcrawl Edmonton: Celebrate Summer With Downtown Edmonton Eats! On July 17, Mike and I went to Edmonton’s third Dishcrawl!

We started off at Red Star Pub at 10534 Jasper Ave., which Mike and I had both never been to before. Turns out the Macy’s-looking star sign that I pass downtown all the time is the Red Star Pub!

At the Red Star Pub we had:

And Ground Tenderloin Tip with Bacon Apple Relish and Applewood Cheddar Mini Burgers! Ding ding ding! Delicious. My favourite of the tree samples. The bacon apple relish was divine!

The second stop of the night was Oil Lamp at 10247 97 St. for Greek food!

Boy did we walk far to get to the second stop! Haha. Taste of Edmonton setup was going on at the time so a bunch of us were thinking it would have been cool if the second stop had been an advanced taste test ;) I would never have stopped into Oil Lamp had it not been a part of Dishcrawl. It kind of fades into a stretch of faded-looking buildings in this area of town but when you step inside you couldn’t describe it as faded at all! Bright, yellow wallpaper, nice decor. The wall by the bathroom is painted to show a nice Greek setting with a cute cat (small detail that I noticed!)

At Oil Lamp we had a sampling plate that included Spanakopita (feta, spinach, herbs & spices wrapped in flaky phyllo pastry), Chicken skewer over a pita, Tsatziki and fresh Greek salad.

The owner of Oil Lamp chatted with us briefly about the restaurant and then we ate! Greek/Mediterranean isn’t my favourite food genre but I did really enjoy Oil Lamp’s sampling plate. Fresh and tasty! The spanakopita wasn’t my favourite but the salad and chicken skewers sat just fine in my tummy.

Next stop was another brand new restaurant and probably my favourite of the night: Crepe Symphony at 10115 100A St.!

This place only recently opened and if I lived downtown I imagine I’d want to be stopping by often! I don’t have crepes often but when I do it’s always a treat. Crepe Symphony is a really cute, small spot downtown. Perfect for quick stops for lunch if you work downtown (which I don’t, so I can’t make these quick stops – damnit).

At Crepe Symphony we were treated to one of their sweet and one of their savoury crepes:

I don’t normally like sweets/desserts but the Banana Nutella was amazing! I want to go back to Crepe Symphony more so for the sweet crepe than the savoury one which surprised even me because of my normal distate for sweets. (Don’t get me wrong, the savoury crepe was fantastic too).

But doesn’t that just look like it just melts in your mouth? I’m hungry just thinking about it! I will be back.

The fun part of Dishcrawl (other than the oodles of food) is the mystery of the stops! Since the first three locations had all been brand new for me, I was wondering if the last would be as well but the last stop of the night ended up being The Free Press Bistro at 10014 104 St., which I am happy to say I have tried before – and loved!

Their newspaper theme is lovely. (Read the review I wrote about my first time at Free Press here)

My friend’s sister also worked there so it was nice seeing a familiar face!

We ended up eating the Philly Press (lean steak, peppers and onion pressed with Dijon & mozzarella), Russian Potato Salad, and homemade potato chips.

There was something in the Philly Press that threw me off… I didn’t enjoy it that much and the salad was a bit too sour but you can’t go wrong with their homemade potato chips!!!!! Amazing. My favourite chips ever.

Overall I had a wonderful time at Dishcrawl! I love the mystery of not knowing where you’re headed next, of course I LOVE the food, and I just love participating in foodie events in the city (of which there are so many! Edmonton’s food scene is fantastic!) It was nice seeing some old foodie faces of people I met off Twitter from last events and also meeting some new people too!

Overall an A++ time at Dishcrawl: Celebrate the Summer with Downtown Eats and I’m certainly looking forward to the next one! (if I can grab tickets fast enough, Dishcrawl sells out so fast!!) I recommend you try and make it out to a Dishcrawl if you’ve yet to – it really is a fun night! :)
