Two people recovering from minor injuries after collision on North Saskatchewan River
Two people are recovering from minor injuries after a collision on the North Saskatchewan River on Sunday.
It happened during the 52nd annual Sourdough Raft Race around 1 p.m.
Police patrolling the area were flagged down by a raft who said they had just been hit by a jet boat.
“It was an actual collision where the raft was struck by the jet boat,” said EPS spokeswoman Patrycia Thenu.
“This is a one-off incident. This has never happened before.”
Police spotted the jet boat’s operator driving near 50 St. and 106 Ave. The boat was being towed behind the vehicle.
The owner was fined $750 for operating a vessel in an unsafe manner and failure to provide information or name after a collision.
“There are regulations for being out on the river under the Canada Shipping Act and if you are breaking those rules, you can be charged,” Thenu said.
The Edmonton Police has a jet boat program that deploys out on the river 8-10 times per year.
