Provincial fire ban in forested areas lifted, Edmonton area fire bans remains in effect

The fire ban in forested areas across Alberta was lifted Friday, thanks to recent rain and low temperatures that dropped the danger of wildfires across the province.

The fire ban was in place for forested areas from the boundaries of Waterton Lakes National Park to north of Manning and east to north of Fort McMurray.

Although the provincial fire ban has been lifted, many municipalities still have bans in place.

A fire ban is still in effect in the City of Edmonton.

“We want to thank the public for complying with the ban since it took effect on May 11,” Deputy Chief of Public Safety Russell Croome said in a release.

“We understand that many people had plans for their long weekend that this ban may impact. However, safety must be our number one priority.”

Open burning and fireworks are not permitted in the city until further notice.

However backyard fire pits that comply with the city’s community standards bylaw, as well as fire pits and wood stoves in parks are permitted.

Cooler temperatures have also resulted in the full fire ban in Strathcona County being downgraded to a partial ban Friday.
