Police cracking down on impaired drivers this long weekend

Police are reminding drivers they’ll be out in full force this long weekend to crack down on impaired driving and other road hazards.

Check stops will be put in place at various locations and various times throughout the weekend.

Police were set up along the James MacDonald Bridge Friday night to kick off the long weekend push.

Officers say they will be focusing on what they call the big four killers, which include speeding, distracted driving, not wearing seat belts and impaired driving.

“Last year we had approximately 10 impaired drivers and 19 24-hour suspensions issued over the weekend specifically to our check stop operations, so we are hoping we can see those numbers go down,” said Sgt. Bill Krull with the Edmonton Police Service.

“It’s one of those things where this isn’t anything new to people out there. We actually hope the message is getting through to people and they understand the dangers of drinking and driving.”

RCMP are also cracking down on Alberta highways this long weekend.

Last year officers laid more than 3,000 charges during the May long weekend alone, including 130 for impaired driving.
