Esks return from Haiti
Three Edmonton Eskimos players are back from a trip that’s changed their lives.
The group, including Kelly Bates, Aaron Fiacconi and Graeme Bell, took part in the CFL’s “Huddle for Haiti,” a humanitarian project aimed to help in the reconstruction of the country that was devastated by an earthquake last year.
Full back Bell says the trip was unforgettable and he hopes to go back and help again in the future.
“I fell in love with that place. It’s a great place. The people is what you fall in love with. The spirit they have, the determination they have just to survive,” Bell said. “It was worth while. It was something that a lot of people should do, and it’s inspired me to do something more and go back.”
Bell described what he saw of the clean up efforts in Haiti, saying that, unfortunately, it didn’t look like the country has improved much since the earthquake.
“Rubble can still be seen on the side of the road, buildings are still crumbled and garbage is just getting worse… you don’t see much optimism in Port au Prince Prince. A year after you’d think that something would happen.”
He added that all Canadians should visit the devastated country so they can better appreciate their own lives.
“Canada has a lot to learn from a place like Haiti.”
The trio were part of a group of seven CFL players participating in the project.
