Edmonton celebrates World Water Day

Tuesday marks World Water Day and here in Edmonton, one local business spent the day celebrating their own reduction of water use.

Over the last few years, Labatt Brewery has asked its employees to come up with ways to save water and so far, more than 200 conservation ideas have been pitched and many have been implemented at the plant.

The ideas have helped the plant reduce water use by 23% — which they say is about the same as 84 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“We’ve made some changes with how we lubricate our line and how we pasteurize our product,” said Brad Weaver with Labatt Brewery. “We’ve saved up to 100 million litres of water this year alone.”

“We understand the importance of water and it’s part of our global platform to reduce water.”

Weaver says the water reduction plans have also proven to help the brewery’s productivity as well.

World Water Day is meant to bring awareness about water and wasting water, while encouraging individuals to reduce water use around the world.

Along with local events taking place across the city on Tuesday, including water conservation performances and conferences discussing water use across schools, Edmonton organizers have also planned sessions for the whole week.
