Charges laid in Sunday homicide

A man has been charged in connection with the suspicious death of a man on Sunday, marking the city’s latest homicide.

On Feb. 20 at about 2 a.m., officers received reports of an injured, half-naked male found in a back alley in the area of 127 Avenue and 118 Street.

The body was found lying in an alley in the back of the residence, and was taken to hospital with life-threatening stab wounds.

Homicide detectives were called in to take over the investigation at 11 a.m., an hour before Stacy Steinhauer, 28, died in hospital.

Detectives linked the victim to a rooming house nearby and a suspect was arrested at the scene the same day while a second man in the rooming house was taken in for questioning and arrested for outstanding warrants.

Police say an argument had taken place between the two men, who knew each other, before the homicide took place.

“Detectives were able to determine that there was an altercation that was fueled by alcohol, an altercation or some sort of disagreement that took place before the homicide,” said Patrycia Thenu with the Edmonton Police Service.

Daniel Friday, 25, is facing charges of second degree murder, possession of a weapon and breach of probation. He will appear in court on Tuesday morning.

An autopsy for Steinhauer is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Police are not releasing the cause of death until after autopsy results are available.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about what happened Sunday night to call the EPS non-emergency complaint line at 780-423-4567.

This is the city’s 11th homicide of 2011. In 2010, Edmonton did not record the 11th homicide of the year until June 20th.
