Albertans come together for Heart Pledge Day

A number of volunteers are working together Thursday to help raise awareness and funds for the Mazankowski Heart Institute.

Thursday marks the 5th annual Heart Pledge Day as people across the province are being encouraged to donate money in support of the heart facility.

Volunteers are manning the phones and taking pledges at the Mazankowski located at 8440 112 St.

The 16-hour event includes a radiothon and a telethon. The radiothon is taking place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday while the telethon, which is new this year, will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Money raised throughout Heart Pledge Day will support cardiac care, technology, leading-edge research, and education at the facility, ultimately helping treat patients with heart disease.

“Heart disease is still the number one killer of Canadians,” said Beth Ratzlaff with the Mazankowski.

“(Money raised will pay for) emerging technology that changes rapidly can be met here at the heart institute and so we can keep offering the technology to advance heart care here. As you know, technology changes rapidly. We want to stay on top of that.”

Patients and cardiac experts are spending the day sharing their own heart stories throughout the radio and telethons.

Global Edmonton’s own Linda Nguyen was also on hand collecting pledges.

The Mazankowski Heart Institute is the first heart institute of its kind in Western Canada.

Heart Pledge Day is one of the institute’s largest fundraisers.

To make a pledge call 780-407-2200 or go online to Heart Pledge Day’s website.
