A local culinarian who has travelled worldwide to expand her skills in cooking is bringing that expertise to this year’s Capital EX.

Instructor Gail Hall has been on culinary trips to New Mexico, New York, Turkey, Greece, Italy and more, touring wine fields and farms to get down to the roots of a country’s food culture.

“I believe that food is the centre of culture,” Hall said from her cooking school loft in Edmonton Tuesday.

“To learn the cooking styles and how they treat ingredients, it’s wonderful education.”

The self-proclaimed “food maven” is hoping to teach some Edmontonians what she’s learned on the stage at Sip! The Wine and Food Experience at Capital EX.

Her first demonstration on the opening day of Capital EX delved into cooking foods from Turkey, while her next will explore Italian cuisine. She’ll discuss food nutrition and the importance of shopping locally.

Hall hopes those attending the demonstration will leave feeling more confident about cooking on their own.

“It’s not just sitting in your car at a drive-thru and eating your dinner. You should take some time out of your day and just enjoy what you’re cooking and eating.”

The “A Culinary Tour of Italy” demonstration starts at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Hall A of the Expo Centre.
