One Edmontonian hopes her adoption of a bunny no one seemed to want will encourage others to do the same.

Frances Wojciechowski adopted Lionel the bunny from the Edmonton Humane Society three weeks ago.

Lionel was surrendered to the Humane Society from the same Edmonton home where more than 500 rabbits were seized last month, although he wasn’t a part of that seized batch.

The black bunny is an aggressive eater, often attacking and hoarding food, a trait Wojciechowski credits to the living conditions of his former home.

“I don’t know if the bunnies there were fed.

“I would assume it was because of the environment he was in where he had to fight other rabbits for food and maybe food wasn’t adequate enough,” she said.

Wojciechowski, a medical lab technician at the University of Alberta, challenges others to help out the Edmonton Humane Society.

Not wanted

“I felt for him. Growing up in an environment where you have to fight for your food and being adopted because no one wants you,” Wojciechowski said.

“I don’t think anyone would have adopted him because of his food aggression.”

“I think people should step up to the plate and volunteer themselves anyway they can, whether it’s going to visit for an hour to pet and brush them or donate $5 or go adopt one,” said Wojciechowski.

The Humane Society’s Shawna Randolph says rabbits aren’t the most popular animal to be adopted.

There are currently 12 rabbits up for adoption at the Edmonton Humane Society.
