E-town earns green spot in Monopoly: Canada

For $3 million, you could own Edmonton — on a brand new Monopoly board where Canadian cities replace property names of the original classic board game.

After a whirlwind of online voting to determine which Canadian cities would earn a property spot on the special edition Monopoly: Canada, Edmonton came out on top as the fourth most expensive real estate in the game.

The city will occupy the green space where Pacific Avenue is normally situated on the original board, with Calgary ($3.2 million) and Sarnia, Ont. ($3 million) rounding out the rest of the green block.

Felicia Dewar, 34, was one of countless dedicated voters throughout the span of the board game contest, even posting daily voting reminders to friends on websites like Twitter and Facebook.

“I voted every day for six weeks, I really wanted Edmonton to go on the board,” Dewar said.

The avid monopoly player said there was no doubt in her mind that the city would make the special edition board game.

Mayor Stephen Mandel said he was “thrilled” the city made it onto the board.

“How appropriate that we’ve landed a green property, given the city’s environmental leadership and our beautiful river valley,” Mandel wrote in a release Tuesday.

Jason Konoza, 36, who had learned about the Monopoly voting commotion on Twitter, credits the city’s top spot on the board to Edmonton’s active online community.

“They’re the kind of people who, when they want to get something done, they’ll do it,” Konoza said.

Monopoly: Canada is the first all-Canadian Monopoly game with properties chosen by consumers. It will hit store shelves on Monday for $39.99.
