Clicks of the Day: Wednesday, June 6, 2012 Edition!

Welcome to Wednesday, June 6 2012′s Clicks of the Day!

Clicks of the Day is a daily round up of news posted Sunday through Thursday with quantity and quality of content differing depending on how busy Linda’s day is.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • Vancouver body parts linked to Montreal investigation
  • “Montreal police said Wednesday they believe that a hand and foot mailed to two Vancouver schools are linked to the killing and dismemberment of a Chinese student in Montreal. Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said Wednesday that the packages were mailed from Montreal via Canada Post, and investigators from that city are now taking over the investigation launched in B.C. The packages also contained notes, police said, but they wouldn’t elaborate further.”

    Gruesome…

  • Jun Lin’s grief-stricken family arrives in Montreal
  • “The grief-stricken family of dismemberment victim Jun Lin has made an emotional journey to Montreal, where the 33-year-old Chinese student was gruesomely murdered. Lin’s mother struggled to speak and could barely walk, according to one of the few people to have met with the family. Yan Shi, the head of the Chinese student association at Concordia University, where Lin studied engineering, told The Canadian Press that Lin’s mother was ‘very emotional.’”

I can’t imagine what they are going through… Also:

  • Berlin cafe owner looking to profit from story
  • “Internet cafe owner Kadir Anlayisli was hailed as a hero for pointing out Luka Magnotta to police, and now he figures it’s time to cash in while he has the chance. Anlayisli refused to grant an interview to QMI Agency unless he was paid in cash, and he says he’s trying to sell his story to the highest bidder.”

Whatever you gotta to make money I ‘spose…

  • Government creating squad to tackle human trafficking
  • “The federal government is establishing a law enforcement team dedicated to preventing human traffickers from operating in Canada… The action plan will also increase training for frontline workers to identify and respond to suspected human trafficking as well as provide support to victims.”

Human trafficking is awful. Hope this helps.

  • Local man convicted of manslaughter to serve sentence at home
  • “An elderly man found guilty of manslaughter in the 2006 death of his wife will serve his two-year prison term at home. In court Wednesday, a judge sentenced 83-year-old Noel Lavery to a prison term of two years less one day, satisfied Lavery is not a danger to the community, the judge is allowing the senior to serve his term at home.”

    This justice system…

  • EPS issue warning about ‘bath salts’
  • “Edmonton police are warning the public about the dangerous side effects related to taking a drug known as ‘bath salts’ – a blend of chemicals that are making their way into Canada. “As far as drugs go, it’s really scary,” EPS Detective Guy Pilon said Wednesday.”

It’s sad that people even have to be warned not to use these drugs. Smarten up.

  • RCMP launches Alberta anti-terrorism squad
  • “Unravelling complex webs of terrorist activity is a never ending job for police agencies across the globe — and Alberta is no exception. With a growing population, a strong economy and critical infrastructure encompassing the province’s natural resources, Mounties say Alberta is an attractive place for terrorists, which is why they are in the process of putting together an Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) as part of an expansion of the RCMP’s national anti-terrorism network.”

Hope they catch the bad guys!

    World

  • At least 78 ‘massacred’ in Syria’s Hama province
  • “Pro-government militiamen and security forces killed at least 78 people, including children, in Syria’s central province of Hama on Wednesday, activists said… The killings came less than two weeks after a massacre in the town of Houla, in which security forces and pro-Assad militia men known as “Shabiha” killed 108 people, nearly half of them children.”

How many more will die?! Ugh!

    Health

  • WHO releases action plan for antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea
  • “Cases of gonorrhea that resist the last remaining antibiotic treatments for the the sexually transmitted disease have been detected in Australia, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden and Britain, officials at the World Health Organization said Wednesday. Sounding an alarm about the immense risks now posed by this once easily curable bug, the Geneva-based public health body announced a global action plan to control its spread and effect. The plan will focus on development of new treatments and on monitoring for incorrect use of antimicrobial agents.”

Global action plan is probably a good idea…

  • Inactivity costs us $6.8-billion a year. (You thought love handles were bad)
  • “A new study says that most of us – 85 per cent of Canadians – are inactive. And it’s costing the health-care system dearly. In total, our inactivity cost $6.8-billion a year in 2009, according to an analysis by Ian Janssen, Canada Research Chair in physical activity and obesity at Queen’s University. That figure includes $2.4-billion in direct costs, which includes providing care to patients and $4.3-billion in indirect costs, which can include workplace absenteeism and long-term disability.”

    Yikes.

  • Does milk work as a slimming aid?
  • “Some surprising new research has demonstrated that a natural ingredient found in milk can protect against obesity. This could lead to a new design of ‘diet pill.’”

    Interesting.

  • More fruits and veggies can help smokers quit: Study
  • “If you want to quit smoking eat more fruits and veggies, a new U.S. study says. Researchers said smokers who added extra fruits and vegetables to their diet puffed fewer cigarettes per day, waited longer to smoke their first cigarette of the day, and scored lower on a common test of nicotine dependence.”

How can you go wrong with fruits and veggies?

    Technology/Social Media/Internet

  • LinkedIn passwords leaked by hackers
  • “Social networking website LinkedIn has said some of its members’ passwords have been “compromised” after reports that over six million’ passwords had been leaked onto the internet.”

    That sucks.

  • Twitter hits 400 million tweets per day, mostly mobile
  • “Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said that mobile usage and revenue are outpacing the desktop web version, and that he doesn’t concern himself about an IPO.”

Maybe if Facebook’s mobile app didn’t suck so badly… lol.

  • E3 2012: Five trends that will change video games
  • “It’s unlikely that E3 2012 will go down as one of the more newsworthy installments of this annual trade show. But, while we may lack blockbuster news (or many must-play games), there are several trends on display that paint a clear picture about what kinds of games and interactive entertainment experiences are coming over the next several years.”

Including “Mobile and social gaming deserve a seat at the table” (duh).

    Business/Work/Economy/Media

  • Pinterest Wedding: Couples can now share their pins and boards on MyRegistry.com
  • “If you’re planning your wedding on Pinterest, chances are that you’ve already created a board (either intentionally or unintentionally) with all of your registry wishlist items. Adorable teacups? Check. Awesome piece of artwork? Yep. But there’s only one problem — how to share those items with all of your guests? This week online gift registry service MyRegistry.com — which allows couples to add items from any store onto one universal gift list — launched a browser extension that lets users easily add any pin on Pinterest to a universal gift registry on its platform. MyRegistry.com members can also transfer complete pinboards onto their gift registries using the company’s new Pinterest import tool.”

Was just a matter of time, eh?

  • Canada’s 10 worst jobs
  • “Canadian Business has collected data on more than 600 jobs tracked by Statistics Canada to determine which ones offer the best and worst employment opportunities. The following 10 jobs have the worst combination of low wages and employment growth over the past five years.”

Including jewellers, fish processors actors and more! (Surprised news reporter/producers aren’t on that list, it so often makes it onto ‘worst job’ kind of lists.

  • Half expect to pay off debt by 2017, survey says
  • “Is it a dream or reality? Half of Canadians now in hock expect to be debt-free by 2017 and that includes their mortgage, a new Bank of Montreal study says. In a Leger Marketing poll, 54% of Canadians said they expect to be debt-free in five years. The average current debt of Canadians is $112,329.”

    Fantastic!

  • Bringing your smartphone and computer to work
  • “Employees not only want to use their preferred smartphone on the job, they are starting to use their computer of choice, a trend called bring-your-own-device to work, which often favours Apple devices. Company-issued PCs and mobile phones are being challenged by some employees who argue they work more efficiently on their own devices, say experts.”

    Interesting!

    Environment/Space/Animals/Science

  • Is humanity pushing Earth past a tipping point?
  • “Could human activity push Earth’s biological systems to a planet-wide tipping point, causing changes as radical as the Ice Age’s end — but with less pleasant results, and with billions of people along for a bumpy ride? It’s by no means a settled scientific proposition, but many researchers say it’s worth considering — and not just as an apocalyptic warning or far-fetched speculation, but as a legitimate question raised by emerging science.”

Obviously. We are the worst thing to happen to this planet. (Too extreme?)

Weird News, Other News & Fluff

  • Bieber fever more infectious than measles, Canadian researchers say
  • “Bieber fever is more infectious than measles, capable of spreading effortlessly to children in far flung parts of the globe, a new study suggests. The work, by researchers who use formulas to predict the spread of diseases, suggests Bieber fever may be the most contagious disease of our time, able to infect and re-infect a generation of children. And mathematical models predict it may not abate any time soon.”

Lol… (was debating putting this in ‘Health’ section but it’s just so silly.

  • [Video]: Andy Samberg’s cannibal PSA
  • “There have been a lot of human eating stories in the news recently, and thankfully, Andy Samberg has taken notice.”

Lol. He is so funny!! :’(

  • Man digs up mammoth in his yard, keeps it in living room
  • “An Iowa farmer found woolly mammoth fossils in his backyard in Oskaloosa. According to experts, the farmer may have an entire skeleton of a mammoth that died 14,000 years ago. He insists he is keeping his fossil treasure in his living room. The farmer who gave his name as John, said he plans to keep the fossils for himself. His living room is stacked full of mammoth vertebrae, ribs and a gigantic five-foot femur.”

    Wow!!!

  • [Photos]: What you see vs. what they see
  • “Or, how a tiny shift in perspective can dramatically change your outlook in life.”

    Love this!

Clicks of the Day: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 Edition!

Welcome to Wednesday, May 30 2012′s Clicks of the Day!

Clicks of the Day is a daily round up of news posted Sunday through Thursday with quantity and quality of content differing depending on how busy Linda’s day is.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • Edmonton man facing several child pornography offences
  • “A 36-year-old Edmonton man is facing charges of sexual assault, possessing and making child pornography. Police say the offences were allegedly committed against the man’s niece, who is now five-years-old.”

    Ugh..

  • Province to file $10B suit against tobacco manufacturers
  • “In an effort to recoup healthcare costs connected to smoking, the Alberta government is preparing to file a multi billion dollar lawsuit against tobacco companies.”

    That’s a whole lotta money!

  • Quebec protests spreading beyond Montreal and being just about tuition
  • “The unpredictable nightly protests that helped spur a government crackdown have largely been a Montreal-only affair — until now. Since Premier Jean Charest passed a law last week limiting protests in the province, defiant demonstrations have popped up in cities not known as hotbeds of activism. Small groups from Granby, south of Montreal, to Jonquiere, north of Quebec City, have joined Montrealers in taking to the streets with pots and pans to protest Bill 78. Their message is clear: This conflict is not just about tuition anymore.”

I believe Edmontonians are staging something in a couple weeks in solidarity with Montrealers on this.

  • Note with severed foot warned of more killings
  • “Montreal police have issued a Canada-wide warrant for a 29-year-old male model and adult-film actor in connection with a dismembered torso found in their city and two body parts found in the mail in Ottawa.”

    Creepy…

  • City webmaster posts video linked to slaying
  • “An Edmonton webmaster may have posted video footage online of a killing linked to the mailing of dismembered human remains to political addresses in Ottawa and Montreal this week. In the days leading up to the discovery of the foot, Edmontonian Mark Marek was told a video on his website could be footage of the murder. The horrific online “shock” video Marek posted online is entitled “1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick” and contains the apparent murder, beheading, dismemberment, cannibalism and necrophilia of an unidentified Asian man by another man.”

    What is going on?!!?

    World

  • Face-chewing victim has months of treatment ahead
  • “A homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre, vicious attack faces a bigger threat from infection than from the injuries themselves, according to experts on facial reconstruction. He will require months of treatment to rebuild his features and be permanently disfigured. Though gruesome, such severe facial injuries are generally not life threatening. The most serious risk to Ronald Poppo as he remained hospitalized Wednesday were germs that may have been introduced by the bites of the naked man who attacked him. One of the 65-year-old’s eyes was also gouged out.”

This continues to be such a gruesome story.

    Health

  • Shark fin soup linked to Alzheimer’s, ALS, and Parkinson’s
  • “The consumption of shark cartilage supplements and shark fin soup has been linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease and ALS (Lou Gehrig disease), due to biomagnification of a toxin produced by algae.”

More reason to leave the poor sharks alone.

  • Doctors overdiagnosing healthy people as sick: Researchers
  • “Driven in part by commercial interests, doctors around the world are overdiagnosing and overtreating illnesses in healthy people, an editorial published in the British Medical Journal says. Aside from being a threat to human health, treating people unnecessarily wastes health-care resources, wrote Ray Moynihan, a researcher at Bond University in Australia.”

    Tsk, tsk.

  • Scientists confirm existence of ‘old person smell’
  • “You know that smell in retirement homes and your grandmother’s house? Mothballs and stale air may not be entirely to blame. In a new study, researchers have confirmed for the first time that older people have a recognizable body odor that can’t be fully explained by grooming, diet, or other environmental quirks. In fact, the study found, this “old person smell” is distinctive enough that young adults can more often than not identify an old person by body odor alone.”

    Lol.

  • Night shift work linked to breast cancer risk
  • “Women who work night shifts have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, according to doctors at the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen.”

    Weird link.

    Technology/Social Media/Internet

  • Zynga wants to be a mobile gaming network
  • “Zynga is building a portfolio of mobile, casual and social games across a variety of social networks and platforms, including, most notably, Facebook and iOS. It has at least 100 million monthly players across its Farmville and Citiville games on Facebook and has expanded its mobile reach significantly with the acquisitions of Draw Something and Words with Friends. But Zynga Founder and CEO Mark Pincus has bigger plans: He wants to be a network.”

    Ambitious~

  • Social Media Day is June 30. How will you celebrate?
  • “Social Media Day is exactly one month away! On Saturday, June 30, digital enthusiasts will hold meetups across the globe to celebrate the one thing that unites us and keeps us in constant contact: social media.”

    Anything being planned locally??

  • Dubious medical syndrome of the day: “Smartphone Face”
  • “Beware, teenage texters and overworked professionals. If you stare at your phone for too long, you just may end up with a case of “smartphone face.” At least, that’s what a bunch of British cosmetic surgeons say. British cosmetician Dr. Mervyn Patterson explains exactly what the condition consists of in the London Evening Standard: ‘If you sit for hours with your head bent slightly forward, staring at your iPhone or laptop screen, you may shorten the neck muscles and increase the gravitational pull on the jowl area, leading to a drooping jawline.’”

    Lol.

    Business/Work/Economy/Media

  • Pinterest analysis: PBS, USA Today engage with readers most effectively
  • “Several websites, including this one, have published articles recently about how journalists are using Pinterest. But none of these offers data-based analyses that measure whether newsrooms are using Pinterest to engage effectively with readers. As a way of measuring engagement, follower counts are a basic metric. But knowing how critical the tweet to retweet ratio is for measuring engagement on Twitter, I sought to apply this principle to Pinterest. I wanted to compare average repin to pin ratios for a variety of local and national news organizations.”

    Interesting.

    Environment/Space/Animals/Science

  • Forget ‘Men in Black 3′: Why aliens won’t attack Earth
  • “SETI hunter Jill Tarter says Sir Stephen Hawking is wrong about aliens coming to attack or colonize Earth. If aliens can get here, Tarter reasons, they’ll be advanced enough not to need slaves, food or other planets.”

We won’t until it happens now will we?

    Entertainment

  • Big Brother Canada: Big Brother franchise headed north
  • “Just like its U.S. sibling, Big Brother Canada will feature a group of diverse castmates living under the constant watch of TV cameras. Chairman and CEO of Insight Productions and Executive Producer of Big Brother Canada, John Brunton, said the franchise presents an opportunity to make serious waves north of the border.”

I have never been interested in Big Brother but this is huge news for a lot of people, lol.

Weird News, Other News & Fluff

  • Interned UBC students receive degrees 70 years later
  • “A crowded reception room at UBC plays havoc on Mits Sumiya’s hearing aid. He leans in, fiddling with the device’s remote, eager to repeat his story of how he was pulled from the University of British Columbia and forcibly interned along with roughly 21,000 other Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. At 89, he’s one of the youngest remaining to receive the honourary degree from UBC 70 years after 76 Japanese Canadians were exiled from the B.C. coast.”

    Wow!

  • Houston waiter receives $5,000 tip, gift is to buy a car
  • “Greg Rubar has been working at D’Amico’s Italian Market Café in Houston for 16 years. This past week a couple, who have been coming into the restaurant and waited on by Rubar for eight years, left him a $5,000 gift in cash after their usual Saturday lunch. The bill for their meals? About $27… The couple had known that Rubar’s car had been ruined on a flooded roadway and wanted to help, so they gave him 50 $100 bills.”

    Wow can you imagine??

  • [Video]: Cat vs. Gravity
  • Very impressive cat!

  • [Video]: Cat tail chasing
  • It’s about 40 seconds longer than it needs to be but it’s pretty cute, haha.

Clicks of the Day: May 18, 19, 20 2012 Weekend Edition!

Welcome to the three-day roundup …

Weekend Edition (May 18, 19, 20) of Clicks of the Day!

Clicks of the Day is a daily round up of news posted Sunday through Thursday with quantity and quality of content differing depending on how busy Linda’s day is.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • RCMP search for two boaters missing in Coal Lake
  • “RCMP spent the weekend searching for two boaters who went missing in the area of Coal Lake in the County of Wetaskiwin, south east of Edmonton. Police crews, along with dozens of friends and family, spent the weekend searching the lake for the men.”

    So sad.

  • Hundreds honour pilot who died fighting Slave Lake wildfire
  • “More than 300 people came out to Canyon Creek on Sunday where a permanent memorial for the Slave Lake wildfire’s only casualty was unveiled. They gathered to honour pilot Jean-Luc Deba, who crashed his helicopter while trying to fight last year’s blaze. A memorial park in Canyon Creek now stands in Deba’s name.”

Very nice memorial to have. He should be honoured and remembered!

  • Man charged after fire spree in city’s south side
  • “A 50-year-old man has been charged in connection to a series of fires set on the city’s south side Saturday.”

I don’t understand why people do the things they do.

  • 12-year-old girl dies after ATV crash near Hinton
  • “A 12-year-old girl has died after being pinned by an ATV in a rural area near Cadomin, Alta., west of Edmonton… Police say the ATV had flipped over and pinned the young driver. The girl was wearing a helmet but died at the scene.”

Really sad. Two other people injured in an ATV crash this weekend too and then a few other ATV-related crashes a couple weeks ago. Ride safer, please everyone.

  • Alberta admits it likely missed its greenhouse gas reduction targets
  • “The Alberta government acknowledges it likely missed its 2010 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal and is now revamping the province’s overall climate-change strategy to meet future targets. Alberta Environment said Tuesday the province didn’t meet its goal of reducing emissions by 20 megatonnes below business-as-usual projections in 2010, although final audited numbers have yet to come in.”

    Fail.

  • Impasse has Air Canada talks headed for arbitration
  • “A final last-ditch attempt between Air Canada and its pilots to work out a new contract on their own came to a crashing halt Saturday as talks fell through and arbitration appeared the last resort. The union representing Air Canada pilots issued a news release Saturday indicating that 10 days of negotiations failed to produce a deal and the dispute was to go to arbitration.”

    Oy.

  • Quality of life varies widely across Canada: study
  • “Canadians are used to hearing their country ranks among the world’s best places to live, but new research suggests that quality of life can depend a lot on where you live. The first-ever quality-of-life comparison of provinces and territories to other countries suggests that while most Canadians live as well as anyone in the world, others are well down the list… The researchers found that British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and the Northwest Territories — jurisdictions home to the majority of Canadians — are in a five-way tie for third spot overall with the Netherlands. Norway and Australia ranked marginally higher. Other provinces and territories aren’t far behind.”

Pretty good quality of life here.

  • Canada approves historic life-saving stem-cell drug for children
  • “Canada has become the first country to greenlight the world’s first approved drug that has stem cells as its active ingredient, offering hope to children suffering from an extremely painful disease that kills up to 80 percent of children affected.”

    Interesting.

  • Canadian Pacific rail workers serve strike notice, could walk off job Wednesday
  • “The union representing 4,800 running trades workers at Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. has served strike notice and say they are prepared to walk off the job as early as Wednesday if a new labour agreement cannot be reached. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, which represents conductors, yardmen, locomotive engineers and rail traffic controllers at the railway, also warned that there might be interruptions to commuter rail lines in Toronto, Montreal in Vancouver, in the event of a labour disruption.”

Are no workers happy with their employers these days?

  • PM to announce future role in Afghanistan: MacKay
  • “Prime Minister Stephen Harper will soon tell Canadians what the country’s future role will be in Afghanistan after 2014 when foreign troops are scheduled to leave, the defence minister says. “The prime minister, I can assure you, will be making an announcement very soon with respect to Canada’s participation beyond 2014 in Afghanistan,” Defence Minister Peter MacKay told CTV’s Question Period Sunday. Canada has about 950 soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan, working on training the nascent Afghan security force, soon to be about 352,000 strong. But the size of the Afghan military will shrink to around 230,000 in a year or so after it takes on full security responsibilities at the end of 2014.”

    Hm.

    World

  • World behind strategy to exit Afghanistan: Obama
  • “US President Barack Obama opened a NATO summit Sunday saying the world backed his plan to end war in Afghanistan, as President Hamid Karzai pledged his bloodied state would no longer be a “burden.” Leaders of more than 50 nations stood in solemn silence as a bugler’s lament recalled the heavy cost of a conflict that has killed over 3,000 coalition soldiers, maimed thousands more and left tens of thousands of Afghans dead. As war weary western publics pine for an exit, the summit was set to endorse a withdrawal strategy and seek firm commitments from alliance states to train and bankroll Afghan forces to ensure a decade of sacrifice is not wasted.”

It will be a rough exit.

  • Powerful earthquake kills at least 4 in northern Italy
  • “One of the strongest earthquakes to shake northern Italy rattled the region around Bologna early Sunday, a magnitude-6.0 temblor that killed at least four people, toppled buildings and sent residents running into the streets, emergency services and news reports said.”

    Scary. Also:

  • Italy quake destroys 250 mn euros worth of cheese
  • “Sunday’s quake in northeastern Italy destroyed more than 300,000 wheels of Parmesan and Grana Padano, a similar cheese, with an estimated value of more than 250 million euros, an industry official said.”

    Yikes!

  • Pakistan blocks Twitter because of tweets considered offensive to Islam
  • “Pakistan blocked the social networking website Twitter for much of Sunday because it refused to remove tweets considered offensive to Islam, said one of the country’s top telecommunications officials. The tweets were promoting a competition on Facebook to post images of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, said Mohammad Yaseen, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication’s Authority. Many Muslims regard depictions of the prophet, even favorable ones, as blasphemous.”

    Blah, censorship.

  • SpaceX Falcon rocket aborts launch in last second
  • “The launch of the American SpaceX company’s re-supply mission to the International Space Station (ISS) has been delayed by at least three days. The company was forced to abort the flight just as its Falcon rocket was about to leave the pad at Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.”

Lol video is pretty funny. Literally counts down to 0 and then it’s like oh nevermind, lol.

    Health

  • Sex, age may affect athletes’ concussion recovery
  • “Female and high school athletes may need more time to recover from a concussion than their male or college counterparts, according to a U.S. study that comes amid rising concern about concussions in young athletes. Researchers, whose report appeared in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, found that of 222 young athletes who suffered a concussion, female athletes tended to have more symptoms than males. They also scored lower on tests of “visual memory” – the ability to recall information about something they’d seen.”

    Interesting.

  • Deep belly fat may increase after liposuction
  • “A new study suggests that women who have liposuction to trim their tummies may gain some fat deeper within the abdomen — a type of fat that’s particularly unhealthy.”

Well that’s unfortunate and ironic, lol.

    Technology/Social Media/Internet

  • Twitter to adopt Do-Not-Track option
  • “Twitter will honour requests from users who do not want their online behavior tracked, the company said on Thursday, in contrast with Web companies such as Google and Facebook whose business models rely heavily on collecting user data. Twitter said it will officially support “Do Not Track,” a standardized privacy initiative that has been heavily promoted by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, online privacy advocates and Mozilla, the non-profit developer of the Firefox Web browser.”

    Yay! Speaking of tracking…

  • Facebook hit with $15 billion user tracking lawsuit
  • “The lawsuit — filed in a San Jose, Calif. federal court — combines more than 20 similar cases from around the United States, according to Bloomberg. The suit’s organizers are accusing Facebook of invading users’ privacy by tracking their movements online, which the site does via “like” buttons embedded on sites across the web.”

    Hmmm…

  • In hyped IPO, Facebook rises but falls back to earth
  • “Facebook fever gripped Wall Street on Friday as the massive social network’s IPO was hit the Nasdaq — but after a rollercoaster day, the stock ended the frame close to where it began… More than 420 million Facebook shares traded hands, with about 30 banks taking part in the frenzied trading.”

Go… Facebook! Apparently the IPO launch was a disappointment though? Whatever. Go Mark Zuckerberg:

  • Facebook’s Zuckerberg changes status to ‘married’
  • “Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg updated his status to “married” on Saturday. Zuckerberg and 27-year-old Priscilla Chan tied the knot at a small ceremony at his Palo Alto, Calif., home, capping a busy week for the couple. Zuckerberg took his company public in one of the most anticipated stock offerings in Wall Street history Friday. And Chan graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28.”

Pretty special week for the pair of them! And sticking with Facebook-related news…

  • Facebook acquires gift-giving app Karma
  • “Fresh off its first day on the Nasdaq, Facebook has acquired another company: Karma. An app for “in-the-moment gifting,” Karma lets you send everything from a bottle of wine to a fuzzy teddy bear to friends via SMS, email, and Facebook.”

Hadn’t even heard of it before, interesting!

    Business/Work/Economy/Media

  • Proof that Pinterest drives sales and its fans spend big
  • “Pinterest users not only buy the products they pin, but spend more on average than their Facebook counterparts, according to new data from Shopify.”

    Intense! #shopshopshop

    Environment/Space/Animals/Science

  • Dinosaur find reveals a new species of raptor
  • “US Scientists have discovered fossilised bones that represent a new species of raptor dinosaur that was about the size of a coyote, officials revealed. The raptor was among several discovered near Utah’s Arches National Park, which has yielded several new species in the past two decades.”

    Cool. :)

  • Scientists celebrate completion of underground physics laboratory
  • “The elevator that sinks into the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, is a gateway to two different worlds. One is Canada’s largest nickel mine, opened at the turn of the last century and still in operation. The other is SNOLAB, a large underground particle physics laboratory, the grand opening of which will take place today… SNOLAB, which currently houses eight dark matter and neutrino experiments, is one of about a handful of underground particle physics laboratories in the world. It is the only one that serves as a giant cleanroom.”

    Interesting!

  • Americans guzzling more bottled water than ever
  • “Despite organized anti-bottled-water campaigns across the country and a noisy debate about bottled water’s impact, Americans are buying more than ever.”

    What a waste.

    Entertainment

  • Jackie Chan retires from action, saying he’s too old for stunts in today’s “violent” world
  • “So long to the greatest stunt man who ever lived, bar none. At the Cannes, Jackie Chan announced his retirement from the action film world. At age 58, he said that he feels “really tired” after decades of putting his body through some of the most dangerous, gruelling stunts ever conceived.”

I love Jackie Chan movies/stunts!! Thanks for the years of entertainment Jackie!

  • [Infographic]: Here’s every Avenger that Marvel ever created
  • “These incredibly detailed infographics by Jer Thorp do the knock-off series of superhero scraps almost too much justice, as they meticulously and elegantly plot the appearance of every one of the 132 Avengers through almost 50 years of issues, with each hero designated by a three-color shield borrowed from Captain America.”

It’s quite the infographic! Not that clear though, could have been laid out differently I think.

  • Woman, 73, breaks record for climbing Mt. Everest for second time
  • “A Japanese woman recently broke the world record for being the world’s oldest woman to climb Mount Everest. This is not her first record-breaker, she had set the record on a previous climb in 2002. According to Reuters, Tamae Watanabe, 73, made the ascent up the 8,850 meter (29,035 feet) Mount Everest, along with a Japanese partner and three Nepali Sherpa guides. This successful climb beat her earlier record she’d set 10 years ago, at age 63.”

    I am utterly impressed.
