Clicks of the Day: Tuesday, August 7, 2012 Edition!

Welcome to Tuesday, August 7 2012′s Clicks of the Day!

Clicks of the Day is a daily round up of news posted Sunday through Thursday with quantity and quality of content differing depending on how busy Linda’s day is.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • Local mom a finalist in Best Blogger contest
  • “The stay-at-home mother of two has a blog and a second website that earn her enough money so she doesn’t need your typical 9-5 job. But what’s really special about Landry is that come Wednesday, her blogging talents may end up making her $124,000 richer. Landry is in the final two of The BiLLe Lotto Best Blogger Canada contest. She finds out tomorrow whether or not she becomes the BiLLe’s new social media and blogging ambassador for a year. It’s a gig that includes a hefty $124,000 salary paid in monthly instalments and only requires her to work 20 hours per week, on her own schedule. Sounds like a pretty fantastic job.”

Oh I really hope she gets it!!!!

  • Wife of man killed in west Edmonton crash shares shock, grief
  • “More than a day after a man in his 50s was struck and killed in a collision with a stolen vehicle in west Edmonton; his wife spoke to CTV News, and described the shock of her family’s sudden loss. “You think you’re going to spend the rest of your life with somebody,” Audrey Flynn said Tuesday, the day after her husband Lyle Rude, 52, died in a fatal crash on the west side.”

Such an unnecessary death. So sad.

  • Police warn Edmontonians of online scam involving Justin Bieber tickets
  • “Edmonton police are issuing a warning to Justin Bieber fans about an online ticket scam ahead of the pop star’s highly anticipated concert set for October 15th at Rexall Place. Police say two fraudulent Bieber tickets were sold for $800 on Kijiji in Edmonton. Officers report it was a cash transaction and the buyer and seller met in person. Police say the scam is not unique to Edmonton, as there have been victims in other parts of Canada and abroad.”

Lol! Ohhhh dear. Sorry. But people shouldn’t be dropping that much for Justin Bieber tickets anyway.

  • Heritage Festival reports record-high attendance
  • “The day after the gates at Hawrelak Park closed for the last time for this year’s major cultural festival, organizers said early results are showing a massive spike in attendance… Organizers also said those hundreds of thousands of people bought more than three million food tickets.”

I hope to be part of the attendance numbers next year! (I also suggest Heritage Festival start on a Friday or be extended to Tuesday so people who work on the long weekend can attend, lol).

  • Parents with sick kids can make EI claims: Harper
  • “Canadian parents caring for critically ill children will be eligible for a special Employment Insurance benefit under a proposed change announced Tuesday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Parents who have to take time off work to take care of a child suffering from a life-threatening illness or injury will be eligible for up to 35 weeks of the special benefit, Harper said at a news conference in Vancouver. The change is expected to affect approximately 6,000 families a year.”

    Neato.

    World

  • FIFA considers action against Canada over referee comments
  • “FIFA is considering disciplinary action over blistering comments from the Canadian women’s soccer team about the refereeing of their semifinal loss to the United States at the London Olympics. FIFA says its disciplinary panel is “analyzing incidents that occurred after” Canada’s 4-3 defeat following extra time on Monday. Canadian forward Christine Sinclair, who scored all three goals, later said “the ref decided the result before the game started.”"

    Absolutely ridiculous…

  • Iran government offices logging off the Internet
  • “Iran is planning to move the country’s key ministries away from the World Wide Web. Tehran states that the Internet is “untrustworthy” and the country is planning a domestic intranet. This action will be the first phase in a planned Iranian project, which would effectively replace the Internet with a domestic intranet.”

    What the heck.

    Health

  • Swine flu, avian flu and… seal flu? Scientists give warning
  • “An emerging strain of influenza that’s killed seals off the New England coast may pose a future threat to humans and other wildlife, warns a new report.
The report, published on July 31 in the journal mBio, said the H3N8 virus caused a fatal outbreak of pneumonia in 162 New England harbour seals from September to December 2011. The researchers believe the virus may have evolved from a strain that is currently found in birds.”

    Uh oh.

  • Poor sleeping habits hinder vaccinations
  • “A new study shows that poor sleeping habits prevent vaccines from working properly, or even at all, by slowing down the immune system’s ability to react to the vaccine.”

    Sleep is important!!

  • Study links poor diet to lower IQ
  • “Young children fed a poor diet, such as candy and pop, may develop slightly lower IQs, a new study says.”

    Hm. Who knew~

    Technology/Social Media/Internet

  • Amazon launches game studio and a Facebook social game
  • “Amazon.com Inc. launched Amazon Game Studios, its first major foray into video game development, along with “Living Classics,” a social game for Facebook. The Seattle company announced the news Monday an email and on its website. “Amazon Game Studios is exactly what it sounds like: a new team at Amazon that’s focused on creating innovative, fun and well-crafted games,” the company said online. “Our first title, ‘Living Classics,’ is debuting on Facebook today.” Amazon did not give out much information about the new game studio, besides that it is hiring.”

    Ooo!

  • Apple wants to buy Pinterest rival, The Fancy
  • “Apple is in talks to acquire The Fancy, a fast-growing social commerce site backed by cofounders of Twitter and Facebook, Business Insider has learned.
The objective: to secure a role for Apple in the growing e-commerce market, putting the 400 million-plus users with credit cards on file with Apple’s iTunes Store to work shopping—with Apple getting a cut of the action.”

I have never even heard of The Fancy, lol.

    Business/Work/Economy/Media

  • Twitter death rumour leads to spike in oil prices
  • “On Monday at 9:59 a.m. ET, a Twitter account claiming to represent Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev posted a tweet that eventually sparked a $1 price hike for crude-oil futures.”

    The power. of. Twitter.

  • Inside Google’s New York City office: Why your workplace stinks
  • “As Google revamps its New York City headquarters, TIME takes a look at its quirky new digs, complete with office-lounge slides, subway-themed conference rooms and free food.”

    Pretty sweet.

  • “Eastman Kodak, which is planning to auction 1,100 digital patents, received two bids from investor groups including Apple Inc and Google Inc of between $150 million and $250 million, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.”

    Intriguing!

  • Vietnamese bank issues fingerprint-enabled debit cards
  • “Mekong Development has become the first bank in Vietnam to launch fingerprint authentication enabled debit cards. Fingerprints are captured by Mekong Development at the point of opening an account, and then can be used, instead of a pin, to access funds. Not only has Mekong’s account base tripled through the use of fingerprint technology since its launch in June, but the deposit balance per debit card account is two times higher than a regular account.”

    Cool!

  • The New Yorker puts Instagram account in the hands of its photographers
  • “Ever since Instagram began its meteoric rise into social media superstardom, companies have sought to use the photo sharing platform to promote their brands. The New Yorker magazine has spent the past six months using the service to broadcast images found in its issues. The photo sharing has been good, but not great, for the business: the @newyorkermag account only boasts about 2,500 followers. Seeing this, they’ve decided to try a new experiment: instead of having its public relations department handle photo sharing, they’re putting it directly in then hands of the photographers creating the images. Starting this month, the magazine is handing the account to its staff photographers, one at a time.”

    Hmm, interesting!! :)

  • Digital Journalists landing more opportunities thanks to digital publishing and community experience
  • “With the rise of social media and communities such as Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram, news organizations and brands are facing increased pressure to find editorial talent who can work seamlessly in the fast-paced world of digital media. As content continues to go more digital, writers with experience in online publishing are finding job opportunities in an industry facing enormous change. Publishing communities are seeing a surge in growth because of their focused approach on breeding top talent and high-quality content.”

    Cool. I love Digital Journal!

    Environment/Space/Animals/Science

  • Fracking poses risk to water systems, research suggests
  • “A new scientific study of the risks associated with Hydraulic fracturing — or “fracking” — in the United States, found that current methods for wastewater disposal put drinking water at risk.”

    Uh oh.

  • Hundreds of human bones found piled around skeleton in Aztec burial
  • “Mexican archaeologists say they have found an unprecedented human burial in which the skeleton of a young woman is surrounded by piles of 1,789 human bones in Mexico City’s Templo Mayor. Researchers found the burial about five meters (15 feet) below the surface, next to the remains of what may have been a “sacred tree” at one edge of the plaza, the most sacred site of the Aztec capital. The National Institute of Anthropology and History said the find was the first of its kind, noting the Aztecs were not known to use mass sacrifice or the reburial of bones as the customary ways to accompany the interment of a member of the ruling class.”

    Crazy.

  • Retired Air Force colonel: 2 UFOs crashed at Roswell in ’47
  • “A retired US Air Force colonel who was in New Mexico at the time of the infamous 1947 Roswell incident claims that two unidentified flying objects crashed into the desert. Retired Lt. Col. Richard French, who had for many years denied the existence of any Roswell UFO, told the Huffington Post that “there were actually two crashes at Roswell.” “The first one was shot down by an experimental US airplane that was flying out of White Sands… and it shot what was effectively an electronic pulse-type weapon that disabled and took away all the controls of the UFO, and that’s why it crashed.” “When they hit it with that electromagnetic pulse– bingo!– there goes all their electronics and, consequently, the UFO was uncontrollable,” he added.”

Absolutely!! (I am a firm believer in extraterrestrial life and visitors from outside our planet).

  • Mars rover Curiosity sends home first color photo
  • “NASA’s newly landed Mars science rover Curiosity snapped the first color image of its surroundings while an orbiting sister probe photographed litter left behind during the rover’s daring do-or-die descent to the surface, scientists said Tuesday.”

Really makes you wonder what’s on Mars!! (And also, what makes the rovers ‘lose communication??’

  • Teachers may be helping the spread of invasive species, new survey suggests
  • “A new survey suggests a popular classroom solution for Canadian and American teachers may be causing problems for mother nature. The study from Oregon State University says a quarter of teachers who use live organisms as teaching tools release the species into the wild when the classroom unit is finished, but only 10 per cent of them do it through a planned release program. Principle investigator Sam Chan says teachers who don’t follow a planned release program may accidentally be helping the spread of invasive species.”

    That’s interesting!

    Entertainment

  • Fox, Marvel huddle as clock ticks on ‘Daredevil’
  • “The clock is ticking for 20th Century Fox to put its “Daredevil” reboot into production before character rights revert to Marvel — but Fox and Marvel brass are working out an arrangement that could allow the comicbook franchise to remain at Fox past its Oct. 10 deadline… But Fox also has something Marvel wants: According to sources close to the project, marvel wants the use of characters from the “Fantastic Four” universe in future Marvel pics, including the giant, world-devouring supervillain Galactus, rumored to play a key role in future Marvel pics, and his messenger the Silver Surfer, who makes a deal in the comicbooks to serve as Galactus’ messenger to save his home planet.”

    Really interesting!

Weird News, Other News, Good News & Fluff

  • NASA’s ‘mohawk guy’ hopes to inspire youth to pursue sciences
  • “The Internet’s newest viral star, dubbed NASA’s “mohawk guy,” says he hopes fans will draw inspiration from his work and not just his funky hairdo. NASA flight director Bobak Ferdowsi shot to otherworldly fame, literally overnight, after viewers of the historic Curiosity Mars landing noticed him and his colourful mohawk working in the space agency’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif. Ferdowsi was part of NASA’s team, guiding and monitoring the rover’s every move until it successfully touched down on the Red Planet early Monday morning ET. Ferdowsi’s mohawk, which sports dyed red and blue stripes and gold stars, stood out in the sea of otherwise standard hairstyles. Viewers quickly took to the Internet and social media to share their appreciation for the “mohawk guy.” Ferdowsi told CTV News Channel on Tuesday that he’s still in shock from the attention.”

    He IS a cutie!!!

  • Ellie May Challis and Oscar Pistorious ‘race’ in inspiring series of newly-discovered images
  • “He’s a world record holding sprinter from South Africa. She’s a spunky 8-year-old from Essex, England. In an inspiring series of images that have recently gone viral, the two strangers, united only by a stubborn refusal to let double amputations stop them, race each other in a friendly bionic foot race.”

    SOOO cute. So inspiring! :)

  • Father’s letter disowning gay son goes viral online
  • “This is what hate looks like.” That was a man’s introduction to a letter his father wrote when the dad learned his son was gay. “Don’t expect any further conversations with me. No communications at all,” the father wrote. Written five years ago, the letter has gone viral online, and has soared to one of the top spots on the community website reddit. It was originally posted on reddit by user RegBarc and it’s unclear who the user truly is and if his letter has been verified.”

    Just awful.

  • [Photos]: Athletes’ nail art at the 2012 London Olympics
  • Love it!!!

  • On spending, happiness and other parting thoughts
  • “Here are seven things I’ve learned to be true about money… Never ever believe what anyone tells you about what is going to happen in the market or economy. They’re all wrong, most of the time… Say no to your kids… Spend on what you love.”

    Nice little write up.

  • Cat Olympics attract top feline athletes
  • “They’re fit, flexible and always land on their feet — perhaps cats have more in common with Olympic athletes than we thought. To web marketer Nicolas Longtin, the parallel was obvious. His Flickr photo set, Cat Olympics, shops feline faces onto athlete bodies in iconic Olympic imagery… Over the weekend, Longtin submitted his photos to popular blog Boing Boing’s Flickr pool. Since then, his fuzzy athletes have been viewed more than 16,000 times.”

Lol some are weird but overall, cute and funny.

  • [Video]: Baby lion and baby tiger playing together
  • Meow! So precious.

Clicks of the Day: August 3, 4, 5 2012 Weekend Edition!

Welcome to the three-day roundup …

Weekend Edition (August 3, 4, 5) of Clicks of the Day!

Clicks of the Day is a daily round up of news posted Sunday through Thursday with quantity and quality of content differing depending on how busy Linda’s day is.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • Cleanup underway in Whitecourt after storm causes ‘extensive’ damage
  • “Residents in Whitecourt – and in communities across the province – are cleaning up after extreme weather caused damage in a number of areas Saturday.”

Crazy the damage these winds caused.

  • Young Stollery patients take part in special summer camp
  • “Kids and teenagers who have spent much of their lives in the hospital got a chance to get away at a special camp this weekend. Twenty five campers who have undergone brain or spinal surgeries at the Stollery Children’s Hospital took part in Camp Everest over the weekend, participating in camp activities and spending time with other kids who have gone through similar experiences.”

Looks like a lot of fun. :)

  • Heritage Festival filled with sights, sounds and tastes of the world
  • “The Munros were some of the thousands of people to visit William Hawrelak Park Saturday afternoon for the opening day of the 37th annual Heritage Festival. The festival drew a record 112,000 visitors on Saturday, and officials estimated a total of 344,000 people would attend over the weekend, based on last year’s numbers. With sunny skies and the temperature hitting 27 degrees, Edmontonians enjoyed beautiful weather, though thuderstorm warnings prompted organizers to shut the festival early on Saturday night. Festival-goers were also treated to the music, food and dancing of more than 80 cultures, represented at 62 different pavilions. ”

So jealous… I really think Heritage Festival should start on a Friday because some people work all August long weekend and can’t attend! :’(

  • Don’t get conned by corn-scammers
  • “The city may seem like it’s teeming with roadside Taber corn merchants but Edmontonians should be wary of their purchase, say producers and distributors. Counterfeit corn has been a problem in the City of Champions for several years and it’s hurting legitimate Taber corn sellers, said David Jensen, a Taber corn producer and president of the Alberta Corn Growers Association. “We call it counterfeit Taber corn. They just get corn from somewhere else and call it Taber corn and that’s how it works,” explained Jensen. “And Edmonton is one of the worst places for it.””

    Sketch!

  • Recap: What the Truck?! at Victoria Promenade
  • “Thousands of people descended upon our biggest What the Truck?! yet to fill up on tasty food and the amazing view of Edmonton’s river valley… We’ve heard lots of feedback about Friday’s event already – thank you to everyone who has been in touch. We know that some of the lines were long, chaotic, and that some of the trucks ran out of food rather quickly. We always try to learn from our events, and we definitely have some ideas about how we can improve future events.”

Didn’t get to go to this because I got off work late and then had a thing to do that would run until 8 p.m. Plus it drawing massive crowds and hearing reports of trucks selling out and long line ups didn’t make me too eager to try and swing by… I’ve had pretty bad luck the last few food truck festivals I’ve tried to head to. Hoping their ideas on how to improve future events works! I do however plan on going to Eat. St. filming on Tuesday!! Woo hoo! The food truck scene here is getting so BIG.

  • What’s happening in the Edmonton blogosphere?
  • “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a one-stop-shop for Edmonton blogs? Where you could see a list of all the blogs and maybe even see all of the latest posts too?”

Well now you CAN! Thanks for this Mack. :) And thanks for including my blog!!

    World

  • Gunman, six others dead at Wisconsin Sikh temple
  • “The FBI will investigate Sunday’s rampage at a Sikh temple in a Milwaukee suburb as a “domestic terrorist-type incident” that left at least six people and the gunman dead, the town’s police chief said. Another three people were wounded, including the first officer to respond to the scene, Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said. A second officer returned fire, killing the suspect, Edwards said.”

Sigh. What’s wrong with some people…

  • 2,000 arrested in China in counterfeit drug crackdown
  • “Chinese government authorities have detained nearly 2,000 people as part of a nationwide crackdown on the sale of fake or counterfeit drugs and health care products, according to a report on Sunday from Xinhua, the official news agency. ”

    That’s a lot of people involved…

  • Rosie MacLennan wins Canada’s first trampoline gold
  • “Rosie MacLennan won Canada’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in trampoline at the London 2012 Olympic Games Saturday. It is the first gold medal Canada has won at London 2012. ”

Hooray!!! (But our medal count compared to other countries is kind of sad. Bring on the Winter Olympics! Lol).

    Health

  • Canada’s diet pill market about to get heavier: Approval sought for new weight-loss drug
  • “A weight-loss drug recently approved for use in the U.S. may be headed for Canada — a move that could mark a turning point in a controversial corner of medicine that last saw a new drug approved more than a decade ago. The makers of Belviq say they are poised to market their drug in Canada, a plan that, if approved, would double the country’s prescription diet pill market – from one drug to two.”

    Hmm.

  • Alberta researchers debunk fitness myths
  • “No one has died from dehydration while exercising. On the other hand, 16 people have died from over-hydration while working out. Yet sports companies tell us you need to drink before you feel thirsty when you exercise. Don’t believe it, says Peter Gill, a University of Alberta medical student and a Rhodes Scholar completing his PhD in primary care at the University of Oxford in the U.K. Gill was part of a team of Oxford researchers with the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine, who looked into the evidence — 550 studies — behind some sports products that promise enhanced athletic performance or improved muscle recovery. What they found is that athletes and consumers spend millions of dollars annually on myths, products that don’t work, and that could actually do harm.”

    We’re all suckas.

  • New, clearer food labelling rules take effect this weekend
  • “New food labelling rules that take effect this weekend are set to help millions of Canadians with food allergies as well as those with celiac disease. The food allergen labelling regulations put forth by Health Canada requires food makers to clearly identify the presence of ingredients that could cause allergic reactions.”

I never realized how hard grocery shopping could be for some people. Glad these new rules are in effect for them!

  • Gluten-free diets and celiac disease: study finds little link
  • “By the latest estimates, about 1.8 million people in the U.S. have celiac disease, though 1.4 million of them have not been diagnosed… What’s particularly surprising about this gap in diagnosis is that it doesn’t reflect attitudes about gluten: 1.6 million people who do not have celiac disease still follow gluten-free diets. That means that 80 percent of those on a gluten-free diet have not been diagnosed with celiac disease.”

    How faddish.

  • Canadians supersize servings, new study finds
  • “Canada’s Food Guide has been setting serving size recommendations for decades and as it celebrates its 70th anniversary, a new study shows that we still are not clear on how much to eat.”

    I know I eat way too much…

    Technology/Social Media/Internet

  • Facebook now updates its code twice every day
  • “As Facebook grows towards 1 billion monthly active users and beyond, maintaining and frequently improving the site is a must. The company’s hacker mentality of “move fast and break things” definitely applies here. “We’re making this change to keep our release process as quick and efficient at 1,000 engineers as it was at 100,” release engineering manager Chuck Rossi said in a statement.”

    Intense!

  • Samsung to unveil new galaxy Note in late August
  • “Samsung Electronics is set to take the wraps off a sequel to its popular Galaxy Note smartphone at an event on August 29, about two weeks before the possible debut of Apple’s new iPhone.”

I’m still surprised not everyone has an iPhone, lol.

  • How PowerPoint changed Microsoft and my life
  • “Microsoft recently reported the first quarterly financial loss in its history. The reason was a big acquisition gone sour. Microsoft had to write off more than $6bn (£3.8bn) that it had spent to acquire Aquantive, an online advertising business. By contrast, Microsoft’s earliest acquisition, PowerPoint, has been a financial success. Microsoft bought PowerPoint 25 years ago, on 31 July 1987. The result may have been more valuable to Microsoft than any of the more than 100 acquisitions it has made since.”

    Ah PowerPoint!

  • Photo project uses real-time updates from Instagram to show what’s happening in a city
  • “This is Now project is a visual composition which uses real-time updates from the ever popular Instagram application based on users geo-tag locations. The tool streams photos instantly as soon as they are uploaded on Instagram and captures a cities movement, in a fluid story.”

    Pretty neat!

    Business/Work/Economy/Media

  • Canadians willing to pay more for local food: Study
  • “Ontarians and British Columbians are willing to pay more for local wine, fruits, vegetables and meat products than any other province, a survey released on the weekend says. It also found that Albertans are the most likely to buy local when they shop for beef and that Quebecers are the most likely to buy their local food from fruit and vegetable stands.”

It depends for me. I love putting money to local restaurants but when it comes to buying food… I lean towards whichever store is going to give me a lower bill in the end. Finances are rough! :(

    Environment/Space/Animals/Science

  • A $9 cardboard bike set to enter production in Israel
  • “The last time you purchased something made entirely from cardboard, chances are it was a box to pack up your belongings. While the sturdy material is perfect for moving your stuff, an inventor from Israel has figured out a way to make cardboard move you. Using nine dollars worth of materials, bicycle enthusiast Izhar Gafni has created a fully functioning, water-resistant bicycle, made, from seat to spokes, entirely of recycled cardboard. The technology makes the environmentalist’s choice mode of transportation even a bit greener and easier on the wallet.”

    Wow!

  • Mars rover Curiosity on course to land Monday
  • “After a journey of 354 million miles to the outskirts of Mars, the Curiosity rover and its spacecraft are speeding up and coming under the influence of the planet’s gravity as it prepares for a dramatic landing early Monday. NASA officials said early Sunday afternoon that the spacecraft was about 100,000 miles from Mars and remained in ideal shape. They also said its position in relation to the point selected to enter the atmosphere also is on target. The upcoming landing is one of the riskiest ever tried, with final descent that starts at 13,200 mph and ends after what NASA officials call “seven minutes of terror.””

Lol funny that there are landing parties for this!

  • Rockies, other geography made Canada’s West a dinosaur hot bed
  • “Western Canada’s remarkable dinosaur riches, a scientific wonder and tourism magnet for Alberta as well as parts of Saskatchewan and B.C., can be traced in large part to the birth of the Rocky Mountains and other geological forces that combined to create a multitude of isolated animal habitats in the region about 75 million years ago, according to a new U.S.-led study.”

    Cool. :)

Weird News, Other News, Good News & Fluff

  • How do people find the superhuman strength to lift cars?
  • “When Lauren Kornacki discovered her father crushed beneath his BMW 525i, which had slipped off the carjack as he was working on it, the 22-year-old wedged herself under the mid-sized vehicle — and pulled it off her father. We hear tales from time to time of people exhibiting superhuman strength in life-and-death emergencies. After experiencing amazement over such a feat, we all wonder: How can a regular person lift something that weighs more than a ton?”

    SO interesting.

  • Ryan Lotche admits peeing in Olympic pool
  • “America’s latest golden boy in the pool candidly admitted to urinating in the Olympic pool while warming up for his impressive swimming feats.”

Lol. Good for him for admitting it. Come on, you can’t say you’ve never peed in a pool!

  • Gold medal-like full moon sixth Olympic ring on Tower Bridge
  • “Just as Great Britain stunned the world of athletics at the Olympic Stadium in London with three track and field golds, a full moon rising under Tower Bridge formed an image like a sixth Olympic ring. The image has gone viral on Twitter.”

It is a truly amazing photo!!!

  • [Video]: Shallow flood
  • “A news reporter is doing a story on a devastating flood from the safety of a life raft until someone comes by and shatters the dramatic illusion.”

    LOL oh my god…

  • [Photos]: 25 cats who have found that perfect place to relax

Clicks of the Day: Monday, July 16, 2012 Edition!

Welcome to Monday, July 16 2012′s Clicks of the Day!

Clicks of the Day is a daily round up of news posted Sunday through Thursday with quantity and quality of content differing depending on how busy Linda’s day is.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • Officials expect Hwy 16 to be fully open Tuesday
  • “While Alberta Transportation officials had hoped to have the rest of Highway 16 re-opened by Monday evening, CTV News has learned the major road will not open until late Tuesday morning, at the earliest. Crews have been working to clear water from a portion of the highway – after heavy rains dislodged a culvert and flooded the road.”

What a mess this caused! Also… it’s crazy how our city (and areas around the city) is just destroyed after rainfall…

  • Flooded basement? Don’t expect government help
  • “Despite reports of almost 200 basement floods because of Sunday’s steady downfall, the director of the city’s drainage department doubts the recent rains will prompt a request for help from the province’s disaster recovery program. “I don’t think that this storm warrants that type of action,” said Derek Melmoth, director of Edmonton’s drainage operations, admitting he doesn’t make the ultimate decision to apply on behalf of city residents for relief from Alberta’s Disaster Recovery Program. That program provides funding for flooding damage that isn’t covered by insurance, such as seepage of surface water into basements through foundation cracks or over window wells. Insurance only covers sewage backup. “It got kicked in in 2004 because we had 4,500 basement floodings.””

I feel so bad for those affected by flooding! Boo. Hope their insurance covers it. (Still sad to have to throw out your things though).

  • Man struck by limousine and killed
  • “A young man is dead after being struck by a limousine on Edmonton’s south side early Monday morning.”

Very sad. Lots of pedestrian deaths lately (it feels like).

  • Owner of missing wallaby hopeful after recent sighting
  • “The owner of a wallaby that went missing last year is hopeful she may be soon reunited with her furry friend, after the wallaby was recently spotted in Parkland County.”

Such a cute wallaby… especially the pictures with the CAT! :) I hope he is reunited with his owner soon.

  • More remains found at site of B.C. landslide
  • “More human remains were found Monday under a field of debris at the site of a landslide that washed away three homes in southeastern British Columbia late last week. RCMP confirmed the news Monday, a day after more remains were found as crews sifted through debris near the Johnsons Landing home belonging to Val Webber, one of four people who went missing after the slide.”

    Very sad.

    World

  • Clashes in Syrian capital revive calls for action against Bashar al-Assad
  • “The most intense clashes seen in Damascus since the start of the Syrian uprising flared on Monday as loyalist units and guerilla forces battled near the city centre.”

How has serious action not been taken against Assad yet?! Every day more die.

  • World sea piracy plunges 54 per cent in first half of 2012
  • “Sea piracy fell 54 per cent worldwide in the first half of 2012, led by a dramatic drop in Somali piracy, an international maritime watchdog said Monday.”

    That’s good!

  • Dentist found reusing needles, thousands urged to get HIV tests
  • “Angry they were deceived by a doctor they thought they could trust, former patients of a suspended Colorado dentist who allegedly used dirty needles on patients for over 12 years are now being urged to get testing for HIV and Hepatitis.”

    My goodness…

    Health

  • Ottawa to appeal B.C. court’s doctor-assisted suicide ruling
  • “The federal government announced Friday it will appeal last month’s British Columbia court ruling that struck down Canada’s laws banning doctor-assisted suicides. Attorney General Rob Nicholson says the government believes that the Criminal Code provisions that prohibit medical professionals and others from providing assistance in a suicide are constitutionally valid.”

    Oy….

  • More TV linked to bigger waists, weaker legs in kids
  • “Canadian researchers have found that every hour of TV that two- to four-year-olds watch contributes to their waist sizes and their ability to perform in sports by the end of grade 4. Lots of studies have linked excessive TV watching with childhood obesity. But this study is the first to look at how time in front of the TV affects kids’ strength, using a test called the standing long jump, which is a good measure of something called “explosive leg strength.””

All these studies just hate TV viewing don’t they.

  • Seven hours sleep needed to avoid mental decline, Vancouver Alzheimer’s conference told
  • “Seven hours — not more and not less — appears to be the magic number when it comes to how much sleep we need to keep our brains sharp and possibly avoid mental decline or even Alzheimer’s disease, according to the researchers of new studies presented in Vancouver Monday.”

    My average is ten, lol.

  • Breastfeeding could cut obesity risk
  • “New research suggests that the promotion of breastfeeding to women could provide a long-term reduction in obesity rates… According to NBC News, when the data was reviewed it was found that women who breastfed their children were found to have a lower body mass index (BMI) on average than those who did not. The research also demonstrated that for every six months that a woman had breastfed, her BMI was on average one per cent lower compared with women who did not breast feed their children.”

    +1 for breast milk.

  • Should Internet users have the ‘right to be forgotten?’
  • “Imagine the ability to delete all digital evidence of an offensive blog post, photos of last weekend’s out-of-control party, or video of a regrettable prank you pulled years ago… Web users around the world may soon be able to exercise this so-called “right to be forgotten,” the power to selectively erase one’s self from the Internet, thanks to a European directive that argues users should have total control over their online data.”

    Fascinating. Yay/nay?

  • Study: Viewers turning to YouTube as news source
  • “A new study has found that YouTube has become a major platform for news, one where viewers are turning for eyewitness videos in times of major events and natural disasters… “There’s a new form of video journalism on this platform,” said Amy Mitchell, deputy director of the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. “It’s a form in which the relationship between news organizations and citizens is more dynamic and more multiverse than we’ve seen in most other platforms before.” More than a third of the most-watched videos came from citizens. Than more half came from news organizations, but footage in those videos sometimes incorporated footage shot by YouTube users.”

Cool. Hopefully that relationship continues to grow and get better!

  • Marissa Mayer: From Google ‘geek’ to Yahoo CEO
  • “Google’s first female engineer, Marissa Mayer, has made a career out of bucking expectations — and she did so once again on Monday by announcing she will leave Google to be the new CEO of Yahoo, the struggling company that once was Google’s main competitor.”

    Cool.

  • New Microsoft Office touts touch controls and default online storage
  • “New versions of Microsoft’s word processing, spreadsheet and email programs will sport touch-based controls and emphasize Internet storage to reflect an industry-wide shift away from the company’s strengths in desktop and laptop computers. The new offerings appear designed to help Microsoft retain an important source of revenue as more people access documents from mobile devices. The new Office suite also reflects the fact that people tend to work from multiple computers – perhaps a desktop in the office, a laptop at home and a tablet computer on a train and a smartphone at the doctor’s office.”

Will have to try it firsthand to see how I like it.

  • Behold: The first ever Instagram shot
  • “Before the $1 billion sale to Facebook, before the 575 likes per second, before the 30 million registered users…there was this Instagram photo of a foot and a dog. The shot was featured in a blog post on Monday by Instagram HQ, celebrating two years to the day of the first photo uploaded to the photo-sharing network’s precursor, Codename. Fast forward a couple years, and feet and dogs have become Instagram mainstays along with cats, brunch and bridges.”

    Love Instagram!

  • San Francisco deems Apple computers not green enough to buy
  • “Just when you thought Apple was really starting to go green—announcing plans to power its newest data center largely with renewable energy—the tech company took a big step backward last week, requesting that all of its products be removed from EPEAT, a registry of environmentally friendly electronics. What’s really strange is that Apple helped start EPEAT back in 2006, and now it’s just backing out without much of an explanation. But while it’s unclear why Apple seems to be moving away from green devices, the unfailingly green city of San Francisco has taken notice. Officials announced earlier this week that city agencies will no longer be allowed to purchase Apple desktops and laptops, at least without going through an onerous waiver application process.”

    Interesting.

  • Tim Hortons downgraded to ‘sell’ by Goldman Sachs
  • “Tim Hortons has been downgraded to a “sell” rating at Goldman Sachs over concerns that moderation in same-store sales could be harbinger of more pressure in the hyper-competitive coffee market. A note from analyst Michael Kelter at the Wall Street investment firm says he is concerned about early indications of “impending Canadian saturation” that could reflect increased pressure.”

    Interesting.

  • 7-Eleven offers mashed potatoes from a Slurpee-like machine
  • “If you’ve ever wanted to buy some really instant mashed potatoes, someday soon you might be able to purchase it at your local 7-Eleven. Reportedly, the convenience chain has launched mashed potatoes that come out of a Slurpee-like machine.”

    Gro…sss.

  • How to get married for $239
  • “It only costs $239 to get married. I squawk you not. To get hitched (legally) you generally only need to pay for a marriage license and the services of a marriage commissioner. In British Columbia, Canada, a marriage license plus commissioner cost just $239. That’s it. Everything else is just pomp and circumstance.”

Some interesting points / alternatives but I just don’t want to get married that way, lol.

  • That fresh look, genetically buffed
  • “A small company is trying to bring to market a genetically engineered apple that does not turn brown when sliced or bruised. But it has much of the rest of the apple industry seeing red.”

Ughhhh. We’re all going to be mutated in the future eating genetically-modified food – the future of our food. More genetic modification concerns:

  • Fears over plan to release GM mosquitoes in Key West
  • “A company called Oxitec plans to release 5,000 to 10,000 genetically modified mosquitoes to fight the native population of mosquitoes in Key West, Florida. But residents are protesting that the potential harmful effects of the mosquitoes are uncertain.”

Blah. Are the risks worth the potential benefits?

  • Feline mayor in Alaska town is the cat’s pyjamas
  • “The mayor of a sleepy Alaska town is feline fine. The part-Manx cat clawed his way onto the political scene of Talkeetna, Alaska, through a write-in campaign shortly after he was born 15 years ago. KTUU-TV reported Friday that residents didn’t like the mayoral candidates years ago, so they encouraged enough people to elect Stubbs as a write-in candidate. The town has nearly 900 residents.”
