“Rocky Mountain House leads Alberta for rates of impaired driving, records released in late March show. Cold Lake, Wetaskiwin and a neighbourhood in northeast Edmonton also made a top 10 list of Alberta’s 151 postal areas.”
Drunk driving shouldn’t still be happening. Check how your neighbourhood ranks for drunk driving-related suspensions.
“In hopes of reducing serious injury and fatal collisions on Alberta highways, April is being declared speed enforcement month. The Capital West Integrated Traffic Unit, which is made up of RCMP and Provincial Sheriffs, will be cracking down on speeders on all commuter highways around the City of Edmonton.”
Slow down everyone!
“Monday marks the beginning of a week-long series Global News is bringing you, called “The Capital View.” We will be asking each party leader what it will mean for Edmonton if their party is in power after the provincial election, starting with the Progressive Conservatives. Alison Redford believes Edmonton is a tremendous metropolis, because it’s economy powers so much of the province. ‘If there are ways that we can work together with the capital region, and with mayor Mandel, to make sure that we’re supporting local decision making that allows Edmonton to flourish we’re going to do that.’”
Let’s see what all the parties have to say.
World
“Police in Oakland, California, took a 43-year-old former student at a small religious college into custody Monday after a shooting spree at the school that left seven dead and three wounded, the city’s police chief said. The motive behind the killings at Oikos University in East Oakland remained a mystery Monday night, Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan told reporters. Detectives had not yet questioned the suspect, identified as One Goh, and no charges had been filed, he said. ‘With a case of this magnitude, with all the victims and witnesses and all the chaos, it’s going to take a few days to put the pieces together,’ Jordan said.”
This is awful.
“Japan says it will shoot down a North Korean rocket if necessary, as new satellite images appeared to show preparations for the launch next month.”
Hope World War 3 isn’t near.
“Last week, a video was released showing George Zimmerman at the Sanford Police Department the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin. It originally appeared as though the neighborhood watch volunteer showed no signs of the violent confrontation he told police took place between himself and the teen that night, but ABC news has enhanced the video showing signs of injury on Zimmerman’s head.”
Hm.
Health
“The number of girls committing suicide in Canada has risen in the past 30 years, a troubling trend that’s prompting some experts to question the role played by social media. In a study published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers from the Public Health Agency of Canada report that on a whole, youth suicide rates have declined since 1980. But closer inspection reveals the decline is evident only in males, while female suicide rates rose from 1980 to 2008.”
Alarming… and sad.
“Mayo Clinic researchers report skyrocketing rates of skin cancer among young adults, probably because of their persistent use of tanning beds.”
I do all of my skin colour changin’ au naturale~
“Cancer-related deaths are on the rise among India’s younger and poorer population, according to a report released on Wednesday… seven out of every 10 deaths occur in the 30-69 age bracket. The cause of the disease’s increasing presence? Tobacco, which was found to be the leading cause of cancer in the subcontinent and attributed to 40 percent of cancers in men and 20 percent in women.”
Sad. Stop smoking. It kills.
“It’s a developmental disorder that affects about 200,000 Canadians and one in every 110 children is born with the condition. Still, little is known about what causes autism spectrum disorder. Monday marks the fifth anniversary of World Autism Awareness Day, which was started following a United Nations resolution in 2007. It’s only one of three official health-specific UN Days, and is meant to focus the world’s attention on autism, a global health crisis that affects tens of millions of people worldwide.”
I’m actually really surprised I don’t personally know anyone with autism, given the rapid rise in children diagnosed.
Technology/Social Media
“The Facebook-related firings have begun: A teacher’s aide in Michigan was let go from her job after a school administrator demanded that she turn over her Facebook password and she refused. The aide, Kimberly Hester, is preparing for a legal showdown with the school system.”
The saga continues…
“The new iPad is so good that the nonprofit Consumer Reports said it had to redo the way it evaluates tablets. All other rivals, which previously had gotten “excellent” ratings were downgraded en masse to “very good.” ”
Lol wow.
“Wealthier smartphone users are less likely to play games or tweet and will opt for news, travel or finance apps, according to a new study. The research by The Luxury Institute focused on app usage among wealthy consumers, who earn an annual income of $150,000 or more. They tend to be older, with a mean age of 52. The findings are in contrast to smartphone usage as a whole, which research firm Nielsen showed is dominated by games and social networking categories.”
How hoity-toity of them higher income earners. Lol.
Business/Consumer/Media/Work
Myths including “they lack organizaitonal loyalty” and “they aren’t interested in their work.” Both of which are false when it comes to myself personally. But I’ve always found myself to be a lot more gungho with my work ethic than others, lol.
“Lori Gilson, president of Utah-based PRMarketing.com, said many of the agency’s social media marketing clients are now requesting Pinterest accounts along with the popular Facebook and Twitter pages. Looking to enhance their online public relations campaigns, companies scrambled to Pinterest last year as monthly traffic to the website shot up from 418,000 to 11.7 million unique visitors, according to a report from comScore. This has led to more marketing job postings with Pinterest experience preferred.”
Oh Pinterest. :)
Environment/Space/Animals
“A special report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) paints a portrait of a world in which 1-in-20-year heat waves are likely to become 1-in-2-year events by the end of the 21st century. Similarly, 1-in-20-year maximum daily precipitation amounts will likely become 1-in-5-year events. And even though tropical hurricanes may be less frequent in the future, their wind speeds will become stronger and their paths will shift polewards.”
Sigh.
“When our ancestors first used fire has been a long-running debate, and a new study concludes the earliest firm evidence comes from about one million years ago in a South African cave. The ash and burnt-bone samples found there suggest fires frequently burned in that spot, researchers said Monday.”
We’ve been around for quite some time.
Entertainment
“An Angry Birds animated series is scheduled to debut this fall. Rovio’s head of animation, Nick Dorra, has confirmed that the company has created 52 short Angry Birds episodes. Each will be under three minutes.”
Not exactly the TV show I had in mind (only three minutes en episode?) but still, lol should be fun.
Weird News, Other News & Fluff
So lazy :)

Clicks of the Day: Monday, November 21, 2011 Edition!
Welcome to Monday, November 21 2011′s Clicks of the Day!
“Are today’s children facing technology overload, or simply gearing themselves up for life in a digital world?”
Probably a little bit of both. #SometimesEvenIGetTechnologyFatigue
“It seems that despite the bluster and hype, the consumer electronics industry was just as susceptible to the downturn in consumer spending as every other industry.”
Yeah I think we only bought one electronic device this year. When life gets expensive, you just can’t spend money on frivolous items…
“‘The ‘Off-the-Record’ policy of one major market daily I deal with on a regular basis reads something like this: A reporter is permitted to agree to keep certain information off-the-record. However, if either the reporter or his/her editor deems the ‘off-the-record’ information newsworthy then the publication reserves the right to publish that information. Not surprisingly, the paper’s reporters rarely inform sources of the second half of the policy (even if they are aware of it),’”
Interesting! Not that I’ve done any hardcore reporting recently but the way I was taught (and just the way I feel ethically) is that if an agreement for an off the record comment has been made – you should keep it. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where anything off the record was truly groundbreaking/newsworthy that required extra thought into publication or not though so I can see how it would be tough for other reporters in certain situations.
“People will only be able to comment by using their Facebook account, which means their name, often even their photograph, will be linked to the statements they post. BCLocalNews.com is not alone in making this shift. Several media companies, equally troubled by the vitriolic trend of anonymous comments, are turning to Facebook to power their website commenting.”
Good move? Bad move? I think it’s a good idea. Keeps people accountable and gets rid of any derogatory comments that may more likely be made under an anonymous name.
“If this weekend’s attack on students had you wondering how bad pepper spray really is, science writer Deborah Blum has you covered. Answer: It’s five times more intense than the hottest natural pepper in the world. (Commercial pepper spray is twice as intense, but the police-grade stuff is supercharged.)”
Damn. That is not something you want in your eyes. Those poor UC Davis protesters.
“Combined 2010 software revenues for the 10 alrgest software companies … are smaller than Apple. Global mobile phone revenues … are smaller than Apple. The US pharmaceutical market …. is smaller than Apple.”
And the list goes on! Wow. Apple is dominating the world.
“Canned Tomatoes, Microwave Popcorn, Non-Organic Potatoes” … and more!
The potatoes thing kind of worries me.
“On Tuesday, Congress decided that pizza is a vegetable. I have to imagine that this news instilled confusion in many Americans, as many Americans are (a) familiar with pizza, (b) familiar with vegetables and (c) sane.”
Wow how ridiculous is that!! Pizza is NOT a vegetable, people.
“Not playing on a team sport, not getting in a fight, not spending enough time with dad” … and more!
Well men, would you agree with this list? And if you are regretting some things, remember: It’s never too late! :)
“The world was a dangerous place for the first birds. Palaeontologists have found a fossil bird preserved where the stomach of a dinosaur would have been – the first direct evidence that dinos preyed on their feathered relatives.”
I always assumed anything small back in the day of the dinosaur was up for food grabs but I suppose we always need evidence, lol.
“Two scientists from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and a colleague from Berkeley, argue that modern academic psychologists have so much flexibility with numbers that they can literally prove anything.”
Lol. Well with ‘study says this’ and ‘results from a study say that’ – all over the news each and every day, it makes a lot of sense that data from those things can be skewed.
“Of more than 1,100 middle school and high school students surveyed in 2008, 24 per cent said they had ever been “harassed” by texting. That was up from about 14 per cent in a survey of the same kids the year before.”
Just ignore or delete or block, teens. (Can you block contacts on your phone? I’m not sure I’ve ever tried).
“Canadian taxpayers forked out almost $2 million — including more than $1,600 to remove a bed — to spruce up a luxury Muskoka resort for last year’s G8 summit.”
Ridiculous.
“The law will dramatically increase sanctions for Albertans who drive after drinking… The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says the law will do little to prevent or punish drunk driving, but will have a severe impact on small business.”
Causing controversy…
“The city’s first seasonal parking ban has now been lifted, but not before bylaw officers issued nearly 1,300 ticket. Fletcher Kent reports.”
I filled in in the editing department today and this was the package I cut! How’d I do? Wish there had been more/better visuals of the guy who is referenced off the top and at the end but other then that I thought it was good, lol. I also cut another package for News Final but it was very stox-boring-viz-heavy so I won’t link it, lol.
“There is a one in three chance of having a false-positive result, and one in every 200 will be falsely diagnosed with breast cancer and unnecessarily treated.”
It sucks when they advise things and then they say nevermind, actually, that’s probably not something you should do.
“Will it be the inevitable third edition to the Pokemon Black and White set of games? Something new altogether? Or perhaps just a new set of Pokemon snuggies?”
Mike is excited, lol.
“Square Enix has confirmed that legendary role-playing game Chrono Trigger will be released on iPhone and iPod touch next month.”
SQUEEEEAL! So excited!! Chrono Trigger is one of THE greatest RPGs of all time. True story :) And also one of only two RPGs I have ever fully completed, lol.
“‘Chuck Norris is a hunter. But Chuck Norris does not hunt. Hunting would imply the possibility of failure.’”
Lol. I don’t know, he’s so old now it doesn’t really make the game seem that much more macho. I wonder how much he got paid to do the commercial though! (Probably a gajillion dollars).
“Oskar, a blind kitty who was born without eyeballs, plays with toys for the very first time.”
This video makes me want to cry. Such a cute kitty, but I feel so bad for it. And the owner/editor really should have set it to HAPPY music not a song that makes me want to bawl!!
