Day trip to the Alberta Railway Museum!

Day trip to the Alberta Railway Museum!

Over the long weekend, Mike and I were really inspired to take a day trip (or a half-day trip). After browsing through Edmonton Regional Tourism Group’s Edmonton’s Countryside website, we decided on heading to the Alberta Railway Museum!

I hadn’t even heard of the Alberta Railway Museum before this weekend. The outdoor museum is located north east of the city and is an outdoor display of railway equipment, buildings and trains. We picked a great weekend to go because it was opening weekend! The Alberta Railway Museum is open weekends starting the May long weekend and guests can ride on Steam Engine 1392 on long weekends throughout the summer.

All aboard Northern Alberta Railway locomotive 1392!

Since it was the May long weekend, Steam Engine 1392 was taking passengers! All board! :) The conductor gave everyone a run-down of the train and the museum. The ‘tickets’ we got are how the original tickets for the Northern Alberta Railway line looked. We learned that this year 2013, actually marks Steam Engine 1392′s 100th birthday! The train last ran as part of the NAR in 1956 and was then donated to the Edmonton Expo and sat at K-Days/Northlands before being donated to the Alberta Railway Museum in 1970.

Conductor Steven shares some tidbits about the history of the Northern Alberta Railway.

What was also really neat is that the son of the first captain who worked in Steam Engine 1392 was actually running the train rides at the museum that day too! Fun fact. :) Admission to the museum is only $5 for adults (train rides are $4). So it’s a very affordable outing. The train ride itself was fairly short and not too exciting – the train just went back and forth on the same track for about 20 minutes while conductor Steven talked ARM/NAR history. But the history was fun to learn and the conductor was funny and very friendly! After the train ride you basically take yourself on self-guided tours of the stationary trains/cars and museum grounds.

Fun facts about the Alberta Railway Musuem:

  • It has more than 75 cars and locomotives
  • You can ride on vintage trains, speeders, and see examples of railway maintenance equipment
  • It has archives of railway history
  • It’s the third largest railway museum in Canada, largest in Alberta
  • It’s home to the most extensive collection of telegraphy equipment in Canada
  • They’re looking for volunteers!

Below are some photos from our morning at the Alberta Railway Museum!

The Alberta Railway Museum is also home to the most extensive collection of telegraph equipment in Canada. There’s a looot of old equipment. It was a big blast from the past… I can’t imagine living in a time when there was no Internet! smartphones… laptops… Twitter!

Happy 100th anniversary to locomotive 1392!

Overall we had a great time at the Alberta Railway Museum. A lot of the other visitors there when we went were families with young kids so it’s definitely a very family-friendly outing. I just love exploring local and exploring Alberta’s local attractions is high on my list of to-dos. If you’ve never been to the Alberta Railway Museum, you should check it out! It’s a quick drive to get there thanks to the Anthony Henday, it costs almost nothing and it’s nice that it’s self-guided and you can go at your own pace. There are a LOT of mosquitos but the museum is nice enough to provide bug sprays to guests. ;)

Pro tip: Go during a long weekend so you can ride the historic train!

Clicks of the Week: November 26 to December 3, 2012 Edition

Welcome to Clicks of the Week: November 26 to December 3, 2012 Edition!

Clicks of the Week is a weekly round up of news. It used to be Clicks of the Day, but Linda’s life got busy so now it’s a weekly thing. Number of Clicks will be dependent again on the busyness of life that week.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • Speaker rules Redford was not in contempt of Legislature
  • “The drama in Alberta’s legislature escalated Monday, as several members of the official opposition walked out of the house – before the speaker ruled the premier had not mislead the house, as the opposition had accused Redford of last week. On Monday, Speaker Gene Zwozdesky officially ruled contempt of parliament allegations made by the opposition last week had no standing, and the allegations were dismissed. The ruling came after MLAs from the Wildrose party were shut down by the Speaker a number of times during question period – as Zwozdesky would not allow questions on the contempt of parliament issue.”

    What a messsssss.

  • Too many drivers still get behind wheel impaired: police
  • “Strathcona County RCMP, with the help of Edmonton police and Alberta sheriffs, kicked off the first Checkstop of the Christmas season this weekend and despite tougher penalties and increased awareness, police say too many drivers continue to get behind the wheel impaired.”

Why are people doing this??? Stop it. It kills. It injures. So preventable.

  • Province projects up to $3B deficit, critics concerned
  • “The provincial government has released their fiscal update for the second quarter, and the update outlined major hits to the province’s finances, and critics are worried the province is sitting on an ‘economic time bomb’. Based on results published so far this year, the province is forecasting a deficit between $2.3 and $3 billion.”

    Fail.

  • Beef inspectors told to turn blind eye to contaminated carcasses
  • “Federal beef inspectors at the XL Foods plant in southern Alberta whose E. coli crisis sparked the country’s largest meat recall were ordered to turn a blind eye to contamination on carcasses being processed for sale to Canadians, CTV News has learned, a directive that was imposed by the inspectors’ supervisors lasting four years.”

    What the heck.

  • Local researchers propose tax on sugary, sweetened drinks
  • “Local researchers suggest a tax on soft drinks could help improve the health of Albertans while generating additional provincial revenue. Data shows Albertans drink more than one litre of pop per person, per day – which means the province has the highest percentage of people in the country who consume sugar-sweetened beverages.”

Probably wouldn’t actually deter people from buying, honestly.

  • Two employment agencies charged for collecting illegal fees from foreign workers
  • “The province has laid charges against two Edmonton-based employment agencies, for allegedly collecting illegal fees from foreign workers. Jonalyn Gandeza and Ira Nadnaden are facing a number of charges, including operating an unlicensed employment agency, charging prospective employees to help them find employment and misleading or deceiving a consumer.”

    Just awful.

  • Some Edmontonians choosing private health care over public for medical needs
  • “Hundreds of Edmontonians are choosing private healthcare over the public system, at a cost they say is worth the extra money. Copeman, Edmonton’s first private healthcare clinic, brings together a number of health specialists including a family physician, dietician, kinesiologist, and neuropsychologist, all under one roof. Becoming a member of the clinic costs $4,200 per adult for the first year, with the price dropping in subsequent years. Lori DaSilva and her family pay thousands per year for health services at a private clinic in Edmonton. They say the services they receive from a private clinic is worth the money.”

It’s hefty but when you add up all the services you get/unlimited/no waits/etc. it does seem to be worth it…

  • Drunk ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ singer convicted, wears Viking horns to court
  • “The Alberta man who became a YouTube sensation for enthusiastically belting out “Bohemian Rhapsody” from the back seat of an RCMP cruiser has been convicted of impaired driving and refusing a breathalyser test. Robert Wilkinson will have to pay a $1,400 fine and will be prohibited from driving for one year.”

I thought his rendition was hilarious – but wearing Viking horns to court is pretty dumb.

  • Paul McCartney allows animal advocacy group to lobby at Edmonton concerts
  • “A local animal advocacy group has received permission from Sir Paul McCartney himself, to use his two concerts in Edmonton to lobby for Lucy the elephant to be moved from the zoo. Voice for Animals Humane Society asked the former Beatle if they could set up at Rexall Place for Wednesday and Thursday night’s shows to raise awareness about their fight to have Lucy transferred from the Valley Zoo to an animal sanctuary. McCartney said yes.”

I am all for having Lucy be in a better environment with other elephants, etc., but if the move could kill her – I don’t see how people can say that’s better??

  • Edmontonians launch Yeggies to celebrate the best in social media
  • “The Oscars. The Emmys. The Grammies. And now, The Yeggies. A new initiative has been launched in Edmonton to celebrate the best social media content and creators the city has to offer. Officially called the Edmonton New Media Awards, the Yeggies strive to recognize some of the forgotten talent in blogging, podcasting, videoblogging and tweeting.”

    How fun!!!!

  • Google updates Street View with panoramic views of Edmonton
  • “Edmontonians now have the option of checking out some familiar city landmarks from the comfort of their own home. Google has launched maps with enhanced, 360-degree panoramic Street View for several Edmonton facilities including City Hall, Churchill Square, the Muttart Conservatory and the Valley Zoo.”

Pretty neat though I don’t know when I’d ever use it.

    World

  • NFL star kills girlfriend, self, in murder-suicide: police
  • “Kansas City police say NFL linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend early Saturday, before driving to the nearby Arrowhead Stadium where he turned the gun on himself.”

    Messed up…

  • New York City goes without murders, shootings, stabbings for more than one whole day
  • “For the first time in well, a long time, New York City went a whole 24 hours this week without a single murder, stabbing, or shooting. Gotham enjoyed the unusual peace from 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, until 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, when a 27-year-old man was shot in Brooklyn. This rare feat in the city’s history is so rare, that the NYPD can’t even remember the last time it happened, NY1 reports. “Nice way to start the week,” said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.”

    Crazy.

  • Bangladesh factory owner: I didn’t know fire exits were needed
  • “The owner of a Bangladesh clothing factory where a fire killed 112 people says he was never informed the facility was required to have an emergency exit, a sign of how far removed the leaders of the nation’s garment industry are from issues of worker safety.”

    Uhhh.

  • Critical loans released, averting Greek bankruptcy – for now
  • “European and global financial leaders have agreed to release (EURO)44 billion ($57 billion) in critical loans to Greece and provide billions in additional debt relief in order to help the country stabilize its ailing economy.”

    Good luck Greece.

  • William and Kate expecting their first child
  • “The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her first child, but has also been admitted to hospital for treatment of nausea and vomiting related to her pregnancy. In a statement posted Monday to Prince William and Catherine’s website, the couple said they were “very pleased” to announce the pregnancy, which comes after weeks of speculation that an apparent heir to the British throne could be on its way.”

A lot of people around the world were excited about this news, lol. It’s meh. I do think Kate is so pretty though!

  • A world map of average life expectancy by country. How does your nation rank?
  • “Here now to provide a some perspective on the matter of mortality is a variegated patchwork comprising 188 of the world’s countries, with each nation color-coded in accordance with the average life expectancy of its citizens.”

    Canada sits at #12.

    Health

  • Common diabetes drug may help treat ovarian cancer, says new study
  • “Could a common medication prescribed for diabetes also treat a killer among women? One group is saying yes. Health.com is reporting ovarian cancer patients who were taking metformin lived longer than those who didn’t, which may possibly offer scientists more insight on how they can treat, and ultimately cure, the disease. The drug, which is usually prescribed to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, is derived from French lilacs.”

    Interesting.

  • Concussions in male, female varsity hockey players more common than reported: study
  • “The occurrence of brain-rattling concussions among both elite male and female hockey players appears to be much higher than reported, suggests a study in which sports medicine doctors were behind the bench observing a season’s worth of games. The study, which followed players on two Canadian university teams during the 2011-2012 season, found the incidence of concussions was three times higher in males and more than five times greater in females than most previous research had found.”

    Eep.

    Technology/Social Media/Internet

  • Yes, you can get arrested for a Facebook status update now
  • “A 21-year-old Indian woman thought Mumbai shouldn’t have been shutdown for the funeral of an Islamophobic leader. Broadcasting such opinions on Facebook was apparently grounds for arrest.”

So much for freedom of speech.

  • Photo of New York police officer giving homeless man boots goes viral
  • “A tourist’s snapshot of a New York City police officer giving new boots to a barefoot homeless man in Times Square has created an online sensation… the officer – identified as Larry DePrimo – came up to the man with a pair of all-weather boots and thermal socks on the frigid night. She recorded his generosity on her cellphone. The photo shows the officer kneeling beside the man with the boots at his feet. A shoe store is seen in the background.”

    Love. this.

  • Social media grows out of its infancy stage
  • “Social networking is no longer a passing trend as we entered the fully-fledged social media age this year, according to the Nielsen and NM Incite’s 2012 Social Media Report. The core finding of the report is that American consumers continue to spend more time on social networks than on any other category of sites.”

    Obviously!

  • Text messaging turns 20. Usage may rise 40 per cent by 2016
  • “Text messages turn 20 Monday and their use may rise 40 percent by 2016, even as mobile-phone owners increasingly rely on Facebook Inc. and WhatsApp to communicate. The first SMS, or short message service, text was sent over Vodafone Group Plc’s network on Dec. 3, 1992 with the message “Merry Christmas.” By 2016, users may send 9.4 trillion texts, generating $127 billion in revenue, up from 6.7 trillion forecast for this year, according to researcher Informa Plc.”

Happy birthday Text Messaging! Love you way more than phone calls in most day-to-day situations!

  • The world’s first 3-D photobooth turns you into an action figure
  • “From now until January 14, 2013, creative lab Party (read a profile on them here) has set up the world’s first 3-D photobooth in Harajuku (Tokyo). It’s a reservations-only combination 3-D scanner and printer that won’t just capture a flat face shot, but a head-to-toe, 360-degree, topographically accurate rendition of you. The printed portraits themselves are highly detailed, and immeasurably charming.”

    Very cool.

    Business/Work/Economy/Media

  • $7 for a coffee? Starbucks introduces its priciest brew yet
  • What can you get with $7? Well, you can probably grab a very nice lunch at the food court, or two decent brown-bag lunches from home. Or now, you could get a single cup of coffee. Starbucks has just announced its most expensive coffee yet, a so-called Geisha blend labelled Costa Rica Finca Palmilera.

    What a waste of money!

    Environment/Space/Animals/Science

  • ‘Binge-drinking gene’ discovered
  • “Scientists believe some people have a gene that hard-wires them for binge drinking by boosting levels of a happy brain chemical triggered by alcohol. The gene – RASGRF-2 – is one of many already suggested to be linked with problem drinking, PNAS journal reports.”

    Hmm.

  • Carbon dioxide emissions worldwide up again
  • “The amount of heat-trapping pollution the world spewed rose again last year by 3 per cent. So scientists say it’s now unlikely that global warming can be limited to a couple of degrees, which is an international goal. The overwhelming majority of the increase was from China, the world’s biggest carbon dioxide polluter. Of the planet’s top 10 polluters, the United States and Germany were the only countries that reduced their carbon dioxide emissions.”

    We suck.

  • Black hole found, 17 billion times as massive as sun
  • “You would probably not enjoy the galaxy NGC 1277. Never mind that it’s far — 220 million light-years away in the constellation Perseus. The problem is that at its center is a giant, giant black hole, 17 billion times as massive as our sun, so big that scientists calculate it makes up 59 percent of the mass of the galaxy’s disc. Astrophysicists have long believed that there’s a black hole at the center of our Milky Way, but it probably accounts for something like 0.1 percent of the galaxy’s center. The one in NGC 1277, scientists report in today’s edition of the journal Nature, is the second largest they’ve ever observed, and it upends what they thought about how galaxies form.”

    Soooo interesting!!!!

  • Mars rover discovery revealed
  • “In a sand drift on Mars, NASA’s Curiosity rover discovered … sand. At a meeting of the American Geophysical Union here, scientists working on the mission talked about the analysis of the first soil sample. John P. Grotzinger, the project scientist, inadvertently set off expectations of a major discovery when he told National Public Radio a couple of weeks ago that the data was “one for the history books.” On Monday, Dr. Grotzinger said he was referring to the richness and quality of the data coming from Curiosity’s sophisticated instruments on the soil sample, not that it contained a major discovery. Dr. Grotzinger and other Curiosity scientists said their analysis did not provide definitive evidence for the building blocks of life as some had speculated.”

Well maybe he shouldn’t have said it was one of the history books!!

Weird News, Other News, Good News and/or Fluff

  • You can now have Pixar’s cute moving lamp as a pet
  • “Nine years before Pixar presented the world with Toy Story, their first full-length animated film, the computer animation studio released Luxo Jr., an animated short about two anthropomorphized lamps that taught us that humans can form an emotional bond with pretty much anything. Inspired by Pixar’s icon, three New Zealand students designed and built a roboticized lamp, says CNet Australia. The lamp, equipped with six servos and a webcam, can move and play (though it doesn’t seem to be able to hop).”

    So precious!!

  • 25 wonderful words and phrases we learned in 2012
  • “In 2012, we invested in dictionaries. Old dictionaries. Slang dictionaries, mostly, and often we didn’t have to invest much. What we spent at yard sales and used book stores was well worth it, and we’ve been shoehorning great terms like these into office conversations all year.”

Lol some weird ones that I’ll try to incorporate into regular speak.

  • Holdout homeowner accepts deal, highway house demolished
  • “Authorities have demolished a five-storey home that stood incongruously in the middle of a new main road and had become the latest symbol of resistance by Chinese homeowners against officials accused of offering unfair compensation. Xiayangzhang village chief Chen Xuecai told The Associated Press the house was bulldozed Saturday after its owners, duck farmer Luo Baogen and his wife, agreed to accept compensation of 260,000 yuan ($41,000).”

Bizarre story + photos WERE real! And just like that – the home is bulldozed after all.

  • More babies were named Apple, Mac and Siri in 2012
  • “The Apple empire has extended to the baby crib. A new baby name report released this week by BabyCenter, a pregnancy and parenting information website, shows more parents named their children after Apple-related products in 2012. The name “Apple” was used for at least six girls in 2012, twice as many as in 2011. “Mac,” meanwhile, was used for at least 49 boys, up from 25 a year ago. And at least 17 girls were named “Siri” this year, up from 11 last year.”

    Soo stupid.

  • [Video]: Tiny dog tries to get toy back from mean cat

  • UTTERLY PRECIOUS!!!

  • [Video]: Kitten playing in slow-mo
  • Aw.

  • [Video]: Kitten chases tail in a bucket
  • Teehehe.

  • Pretty impressive cat!!

Clicks of the Day: Thursday, September 6, 2012 Edition!

Welcome to Thursday, September 6, 2012′s Clicks of the Day!

Clicks of the Day is a daily round up of news posted Sunday through Thursday with quantity and quality of content differing depending on how busy Linda’s day is.

    Edmonton/Alberta/Canada

  • High school principal lashing out at ‘culture of the media’
  • “In a sound clip sent to CTV News, the principal of Ross Sheppard High School was recorded talking about the controversial ‘No zero’ policy at the school, and the public outcry surrounding it. The principal said the practice of handing out behavioural codes instead of zeros for incomplete work was helping students learn – he also took aim at the media. “In my opinion, the culture of the media deteriorated to the quality of pulp fiction and talk radio,” Bradley can be heard saying. He also called the media view on the subject ‘narrow.’”

    Hm.

  • Catholic school support staff set to strike Monday
  • “Edmonton Catholic Schools support staff are in the position to legally strike – after they rejected the school board’s latest contract offer. The workers cast their votes on the matter Wednesday night. The majority of workers voted against the latest contract, which was offered to them over the summer.”

That sucks – one week after school starts?

  • 18 Edmonton-area men are new millionaires
  • “Paying off mortgages, buying sports cars, travel and retirement – they’re just some of the things the 18 men who won last week’s $20 million Lotto Max jackpot have planned for their portion of the winnings. The 18 steamfitters, welders and pipefitters from Edmonton Exchanger discovered they had the winning numbers Saturday – after one of the group members checked the numbers.”

I am soooo jealous of them!!

  • New pedestrian bridge in plans for 97th Street
  • “City staff are working on designs for a new pedestrian bridge over 97th Street to replace one of the last remaining “rat holes” in the city. The foot path over the former train bridge at 104th Avenue currently leads only to an empty lot and creates a dark tunnel where it crosses 97th Street. The city’s concept plans call for a pedestrian bridge, part of a multi-use trail to run the length of the north end of downtown to Grant MacEwan University.”

I would definitely call it a rat hole currently. Hate walking under that bridge!!! Happy it’ll be revamped.

  • Homicide vic loved dog, also killed
  • “One of Bogdan Pamfil’s true loves in life was his pitbull named Deebo. “Oh my did he ever love that dog,” said his friend Mario Kulic, who was there when Pamfil had the dog shipped from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario about three years ago. “He was a friendly loving dog.” That’s how many of Pamfil’s friends also describe the 25-year-old, who was shot and killed in his condo complex along Whyte Avenue Tuesday evening along with his beloved dog.”

As if a homicide isn’t bad enough – why did the dog have to die too? So, so sad.

  • Almost half of Canadians still live paycheque to paycheque
  • “A new survey suggests fewer Canadians are living from paycheque to paycheque, and more are putting money aside for a rainy day or retirement. But there are still a large number that would face difficulties after one week of not receiving their cheques, and savings rates remain low, the results show.”

Paycheque to paycheque can be rough.

  • PQ victory means change, not separation: Harper
  • “The Parti Quebecois may have won the Quebec election Tuesday night, but voters did not give Pauline Marois’s minority government the green light to pursue a separation from Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday.”

    We’ll see.

  • 16 charges for suspect in Montreal shooting
  • “The suspect in a Quebec election night shooting that left one dead and another injured appeared in court Thursday and was arraigned on 16 charges, including murder, attempted murder and explosives charges.”

    Crazy.

    World

  • Bill Clinton’s electrifying speech and the public’s reaction prove his rock star status
  • “Bill Clinton transitioned from political rock star to legendary supernova in forty-eight electrifying minutes on Wednesday night. The former president in his nomination speech for President Barack Obama very likely changed the dynamics of the reelection campaign from blasé to blazing. With folksy mannerisms, wonky statistics and easy charm, Clinton rocked the Democratic National Convention and made Republicans sigh a big “Uh oh.””

    You go, Bill!

  • British girl found alive after hiding under bodies for hours in French Alps slayings
  • “For at least eight hours, the 4-year-old girl lay motionless, frightened and alone, hiding under her dead mother’s skirt on the floor of a BMW after a killing spree in the French Alps. As the hours ticked by, police peered through the car’s windows at the lifeless bodies of her parents and grandmother.”

    So sad.

    Health

  • Bubble tea can contain carcinogens, researchers claim
  • “Bubble tea — that sweet, tea-based drink filled with giant tapioca balls — may be a hazard to your health. A new German study finds the starchy balls can contain cancer-causing PCBs, a group of of industrial chemicals that have been linked to a long list of health hazards.”

I rarely drink bubble tea (unlike most of my Asian counterparts, lol) and when I do I never get it with the balls (just never really liked the taste!) so I think I’m in the clear, lol. Still… what doesn’t possibly contain cancer-causing chemicals these days?

  • Marriage improves cancer survival rates: Study
  • “Being married can improve a cancer patient’s odds of surviving, new research suggests. In a University of Maryland study, married patients with locally advanced lung cancer were more likely to survive longer after treatment than single patients.”

    Getting married next year! ^_^

    Technology/Social Media/Internet

  • Is there something wrong with people who do not use Facebook?
  • “Recent news stories have suggested that employers may be reluctant to hire people without a Facebook profile on the grounds that Facebook usage has become so common that not having an account is seen as somehow abnormal… Is there any substance to these concerns? Research suggests that although not having a Facebook account might be unusual nowadays it is hardly cause for alarm. Indeed, the fact that someone has an account is hardly a credential of mental health either, and may be associated with its own problems, admittedly minor ones.”

    Good talker!

  • Robot cars could increase highway efficiency 273 percent: Study
  • “Cooperative self-driving cars could nearly triple the capacity of our highways, says a new study on the potential benefits of autonomous vehicles. By working together, cars can travel far more efficiently than if they act on their own. The paper is being presented this week at an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) conference on vehicular technology. Its author, Columbia University’s Patcharinee Tientrakool, wrote her dissertation on a method for cars to communicate safely and reliably that she calls “reliable neighborcast protocol,” or RNP.”

Until they transform and enslave mankind forever! Lol. :)

  • Amazon takes aim at Apple’s iPad with Kindle Fire HD
  • “In case it wasn’t clear enough with the original Kindle Fire, Amazon’s got Apple’s iPad in its sights. And today Amazon expanded its arsenal. Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos today showed off three new models of the Kindle Fire, dubbed the Kindle Fire HD, that are clearly aimed at wooing those who might buy a tablet from Apple.”

Don’t businesses know yet – you can’t beat Apple!! Lol.

    Business/Work/Economy/Media

  • Debt loads could push Canada into second recession: Moody’s
  • “There is more than a 20 per cent risk of Canada falling into a second recession — and though much of that risk comes from outside our borders, Canadians’ sky high debt loads could push the economy over the edge, warns a new report from Moody’s Analytics. With debt-to-income ratios at an all-time high around 150 per cent, Canadians have stretched themselves to the limit since the recession and have left little head room to buffer against another economic downturn, Moody’s suggests in the report released Thursday.”

20% chance really isn’t that much though, lol.

  • Samsung says sales of Galaxy S III hit 20 million in 100 days
  • “Samsung says global sales of its Galaxy S III smartphone have surpassed 20 million in a little more than three months. Samsung Electronics Co. launched the flagship smartphone powered by Google’s Android operating system in Europe in late May. The release schedule was about three months ahead of new phone announcement by rivals Apple, Nokia and Motorola.”

    Small victories, lol.

    Environment/Space/Animals/Science

  • The nuclear apocalypse will kill everything but beer
  • “Imagine there’s a huge nuclear explosion and almost everyone you know is dead. Sure, things are bad. But you can still get a beer. Alex Wellerstein at the Nuclear Secrecy blog has looked into some of the weird shit that the United State’s Nuclear Defense Agency did during the Cold War to better understand the finer points of nuclear attacks. And one of those things was to drop bombs on bottles of beer. Naturally some of them were smashed into oblivion, but those that survived were totally safe to drink. In fact they were described in reports as “still of commercial quality.””

    Lol. Who knew.

  • 2011 quake puts pressure on Mount Fuji
  • “Scientists say last year’s earthquake in Japan has greatly increased the pressure of the magma chamber underneath Mount Fuji. The volcano last erupted in 1707, less than two months after a large earthquake. That blast scattered ash and cinders as far away as Tokyo, 100 kilometres from the volcano. Experts at Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention say there is heightened pressure under Mount Fuji due to last year’s devastating earthquake and aftershocks. The magma chamber is about 15 kilometres underground and it is feared the increase in pressure could trigger an eruption.”

    Eep!

  • Tens of thousands of dead fish rotting on Lake Erie shore
  • “Tens of thousands of rotting fish are lining a 40-kilometre stretch of shoreline along Lake Erie, reports the provincial environment ministry, which is investigating the cause. A spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Environment said Tuesday the kill was reported on the weekend. So far it appears the fish may have died from the affects of a naturally occurring lake inversion rather than a spill, but cautioned the investigation is continuing.”

Hate news of mass animal deaths. :(

    Entertainment

  • Psy’s Gangnam Style becomes the 5th most viral video of all time
  • “The extremely viral YouTube video hit 100 million views, a milestone they’ve managed to reach in just 52 days of its release. According to a study back in May from Visible Measures on the virality of Kony 2012, this makes Gangnam Style the 5th most viral video of all time.”

It’s crazy how this video has blown up! (Sidenote: I used to LOVE K-Pop. Even had a fansite for a Korean boy band, lol. Back in the day).
